[Sherlock Holmes]

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
which version was D'Onofrio's? I'm mildly curious about that incarnation now

I suspect that falls under "characters inspired by [Sherlock Holmes]" rather than an adaptation, because that's a pic of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. It's more obvious early on the series that D'Onofrio's character is very Holmes inspired.

above anon:

would you believe I've watched Criminal Intent and never picked up on that before? That gives a new dimension to him. (I wish Ion would play Criminal Intent again, I'm so sick of SVU...)

They really only play around with it a bit in the first series, I think? And his partnership with Eames has that Holmes/Watson vibe. As the series goes on, the similarities are less pronounced, except for the whole Nicole Wallace arc where she's basically Detective Goren's Moriarty with a touch of Irene Adler.

Goren is supposed to be Poirot, not Holmes.

Sorry OP but Basil kicks all their butts. He was the one closest to book!Sherlock and I lover his movies.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Close but no cigar. Also spoiled by DIRE Watson (writers' fault, not actor's)which made his Holmes more like a man with a dog than a friend.

I'd say Padraic Ratigan kicks all their scrawny butts.

And oh, merc!

The Great Mouse Detective was a fun movie and all, but no. Basil was much more of a jerk to both his "Watson" and the girl. Holmes had his less than stellar moments, but generally he wasn't that selfish or arrogant. Of all the adpatations in the secret, Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes was closest to the book Holmes.

This. And don't take my word for it, Jean Conan Doyle (daughter of ACD) thought so too.

Basil had a lot of the superficial trapping of what people think of when they think of Sherlock Holmes, i.e. the wardrobe and superior attitude. But that's hardly the extent of book!Sherlock's character. ACD Holmes wouldn't have turned away a child, and a small female one at that. He would also never fall into a self-pitying funk in the middle of a case. Between cases because he's bored? Absolutely. But during a case that isn't even close to being resolved? Absolutely not.

You have to look beyond the surface and the deerstalker. Basil is inspired by Sherlock Holmes, but he definitely isn't the closest to book!Holmes among the adaptations in question. Even Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock comes closer, and that's saying a lot.

How do you feel about Daryl Zero?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OP don't worry, I have a huge crush on all Holmeses too. I thought I was weird for it! lol, maybe I still am. But there's just ~something~ about him that makes me weak in the knees, no matter who's playing him.

Oddly, I'm also not that crazy about RDJ's Holmes in comparison! Maybe it's because he seems too hearty/tan/American.

RDJ's Sherlock Holmes has never felt very Holmes-ish to me, either. It's basically Tony Stark in Victorian dress up.

+1

(Anonymous) 2016-07-04 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too.

I see your POV, OP. Except I love Ritchie's Holmes as well. And also, if you've never seen Life, you should give it a shot. Crews makes a pretty compelling Holmes-like character as well.

What about Ben Syder?
