Did that movie even have a point? I remember it as being artsy and angsty for the purpose of being artsy and angsty.

It's been awhile, but I remember it being about 2 people that are lost in life as well as being lost in a very different culture - they find each other and regain some balance because of the stability they provide to the other. It's not plot-driven, that's for sure, but I remember feeling so awful for Johansson's character when her husband just swans off to do what he wants with barely a word to her. And Murray's character has a crumbling marriage while he's doing the commercials for money in a language he doesn't understand, much less speak. They're alienated within their personal lives, so being in such a culturally different place makes it more pronounced.

Also, yes, arty and angsty! LoL. Anyway, that's my take on it.

You make it sound a lot better than my memory. Might be time for a rewatch.

I hope it lives up to expectation! I like it, but it definitely isn't a movie for everyone. I think seeing it right after I moved across the country to a very different type of culture made it hit home with me.

What exactly WAS the entire point of that movie?

I'm a westerner who lived in Japan for four years, people kept recommending this movie. I have no idea what was "lost in translation" to me, but it was a movie about white people acting like hanging out in Tokyo was the worst thing in the world and making fun of silly Japanese people. It felt like the movie was supposed to be artsy but I didn't get it, at all, except for the parts that annoyed me.

I don't think there was a point.

I watched it after living in Japan (an experience I had pretty mixed feelings about) and I hated Lost in Translation. The two main characters were so awful about everything to do with the experience of being in Tokyo, especially Scarlett Johansson's character.

ayrt yeah. She was awful and frankly I found the movie pretty racist. I really hated how badly they portrayed modern Japanese people. And traditional culture got the sparkly mystical serene treatment.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Racist bullshit. It wasn't really artsy either, just cold and lifeless.

She's way too pretty for him. Any normal person is. His face looks like a squishy wrinkled nut. I don't think it would be possible to have sex with him without wanting to puke.

i love Bill Murray but he does have a potato face. he is not pretty enough for Scar Jo.

i don't think it would be puke time to have sex with him though, my face is pretty potato-y and my SO is pretty cute and we get by alright haha.

The movie had a point and I think that would contradict it, yeah.

ikr so many people saying it didn't have one wth. nothing wrong with not getting it but then maybe don't talk about it...?

and yes, also coming from someone who was "lost in translation" ha ha. if I remember correctly (I saw it like once, when it came out) I could relate to a lot of things in the movie, bonding with people you can (barely) talk to, landing in strange places and stranger parties, immediate kinship with other gaijin and the unrealness of a lot of things...
