What exactly WAS the entire point of that movie?

I'm a westerner who lived in Japan for four years, people kept recommending this movie. I have no idea what was "lost in translation" to me, but it was a movie about white people acting like hanging out in Tokyo was the worst thing in the world and making fun of silly Japanese people. It felt like the movie was supposed to be artsy but I didn't get it, at all, except for the parts that annoyed me.

I don't think there was a point.

I watched it after living in Japan (an experience I had pretty mixed feelings about) and I hated Lost in Translation. The two main characters were so awful about everything to do with the experience of being in Tokyo, especially Scarlett Johansson's character.

ayrt yeah. She was awful and frankly I found the movie pretty racist. I really hated how badly they portrayed modern Japanese people. And traditional culture got the sparkly mystical serene treatment.

Yep. Racist bullshit. It wasn't really artsy either, just cold and lifeless.
