Start with how toxic Call of Duty fans are, then imagine how much worse they would be if there were no other games similar to Call of Duty on the market. Steven Universe says and does a lot of stuff you don't normally see on children's TV, so all sorts of people with wildly different desires see SU as the one show that could potentially give them what they want. Any potential deviation from their personal plan, whether by showrunners or simply by other fans, is to them an attack on their very concept of self.

That actually makes a lot of sense. If you're upset about Call of Duty and want another military FPS video game, you can go buy Gears of War. If you're upset about Steven Universe and want another children's cartoon with consistently positive depictions of lesbian relationships and characters, you're out of luck.
