Why is this fandom so toxic?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's a shit show that attracts people who think like toddlers and there is nothing more cruel in this world than small children.

Have three year old nephew, can confirm. He is a tiny little jerk right now.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Lesbians insisting that only other lesbians be allowed to talk about lesbian issues. Yeah. Super toxic.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You fuckshit, they're being toxic towards each other, probably.

Learn to read, shitstain.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Lesbian issues =/= fictional f/f ships.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lesbians are absolutely NOT the only people who can talk about lesbian issues. WTF.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, once you start deciding who's "allowed to talk", you're toxic. That's... that's kinda diagnostic.

Also, considering that in this case, what people aren't "allowed to" do is ask folks to stop being actively abusive, you need to stop thinking you're not the villain in this story.

nayrt

this tumblr asshole's anti-spam is being taken out of context. she's a conservative christian who seizes on popular canon gay ships and makes popular posts arguing about how they're unhealthy and gay people are unhappy.

after orlando she started attracting some flack. even my girlfriend and i sent her a few messages like "no. i am happier with my girlfriend and you are a jerk."

i'm not surprised one of the posts is telling her to step off. if that's ALL she does, and with no real textual depth or REASON to it, she's just shitting on people and it's depressing and it's a sad reminder right now. she's an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Because normal people with perspective are out normalling most of the time and they don't get so deep into fandom that they turn rabid.

It's only people who've got nothing else going on in their lives that let themselves fall down the rabbit hole of fandom insanity.

In addition to this, I think sometimes kids show fandoms can be worse than others because people get defensive about it being for kids and build it up in their heads as being super important because otherwise they can't justify being so into something for kids.

This is actually what I dislike most about SU fandom. It's a kid's show. That's FINE and there's nothing wrong with loving it and fandoming for it. You don't need to try and play it up that it's ~more important~ than that to justify your interest.

Or refuse to have anything else going on. I have an ex-friend like this.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This. People like that don't usually have anything better to do.

Exactly my point down below.

You look at the Tumblr blogs of some of these people, and you can tell right away they're trying to fill some kind of void in their lives, and the obsession gradually turns into a black hole that they try to pin their entire identity around.

It happened with the Bronies, it happened with weeaboos back in the early-to-mid 00's, and it happens with things like Disney movies/theme parks or video games.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it has elements to it that attract maladjusted people on the fringes of society. It's a harsh way of putting it, but it's true.

And these same people blindly ignore the point and messages of the series, on top of everything else. I know people say you can't let a fandom influence your view or perception of a series, and that was true back in the day of things like LiveJournal that allowed you to filter out and join social circles of like minded people. But that is becoming more and more impossible to do in this day and age of social media, especially "open office"-type environments like Twitter, Tumblr, and even Facebook. The Steven Universe fandom is probably the first major, post-MLP example of this.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Start with how toxic Call of Duty fans are, then imagine how much worse they would be if there were no other games similar to Call of Duty on the market. Steven Universe says and does a lot of stuff you don't normally see on children's TV, so all sorts of people with wildly different desires see SU as the one show that could potentially give them what they want. Any potential deviation from their personal plan, whether by showrunners or simply by other fans, is to them an attack on their very concept of self.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
That actually makes a lot of sense. If you're upset about Call of Duty and want another military FPS video game, you can go buy Gears of War. If you're upset about Steven Universe and want another children's cartoon with consistently positive depictions of lesbian relationships and characters, you're out of luck.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It attracts middle aged white dudes and SJWs. That is always going to be a highly volatile mixture.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I've been following the show (casually) for a year and never encountered a white male fan.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they are confusing this with My Little Pony.

Because Bronies couldn't hold the title of "Most Toxic Fandom" forever.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Bronies are no longer the force of nature they were several years ago from what I can tell. The SU fandom is pretty much the "Most Toxic Fandom" boogeyman now.

Eh, personally I think that title still belongs to the Sherlock or Supernatural fandom. There's litterally entire wikis dedicated to all the drama and bullcrap they've both bulit up over the years.

I'd say only half or so of the SU fandom is toxic. Finding decent fans may not be super easy, but it's not completely impossible.
