Why is this fandom so toxic?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's a shit show that attracts people who think like toddlers and there is nothing more cruel in this world than small children.

Lesbians insisting that only other lesbians be allowed to talk about lesbian issues. Yeah. Super toxic.

Because normal people with perspective are out normalling most of the time and they don't get so deep into fandom that they turn rabid.

It's only people who've got nothing else going on in their lives that let themselves fall down the rabbit hole of fandom insanity.

Because it has elements to it that attract maladjusted people on the fringes of society. It's a harsh way of putting it, but it's true.

And these same people blindly ignore the point and messages of the series, on top of everything else. I know people say you can't let a fandom influence your view or perception of a series, and that was true back in the day of things like LiveJournal that allowed you to filter out and join social circles of like minded people. But that is becoming more and more impossible to do in this day and age of social media, especially "open office"-type environments like Twitter, Tumblr, and even Facebook. The Steven Universe fandom is probably the first major, post-MLP example of this.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Start with how toxic Call of Duty fans are, then imagine how much worse they would be if there were no other games similar to Call of Duty on the market. Steven Universe says and does a lot of stuff you don't normally see on children's TV, so all sorts of people with wildly different desires see SU as the one show that could potentially give them what they want. Any potential deviation from their personal plan, whether by showrunners or simply by other fans, is to them an attack on their very concept of self.

Well I dunno why someone's making an argument why Garnet should break up... but I can envision it might involving homophobic rhetoric, if so, none of those reactions seem out of line.

You can't give up this script out of context and expect us to blindly agree.

I would assume that it's because in a recent episode we saw Garnet as Ruby+Sapphire, and Ruby and Sapphire were so busy flirting uncontrollably they actually put everyone else in danger and nearly ruined everything.
I'm not sure I'd argue they need to break up, but I wonder if the show is going to address this, and how.
IRL obviously members of a couple need to be able to function separately. In this case, I mean they spend most of the time literally living in the same body, so I'd assume it leads to different behavior...

Afaik (I haven't seen the post but I've seen stuff related to it) it was an analysis post that argued that the relationship between Ruby and Sapphire is dangerously codependent and toxic.

Isn't this secret kinda late? The whole Zamii thing happened months ago...

Anyways, while I don't deny that parts of steven universe fandom are at fault, from what I can tell, Zamii's haters were obbessed with her long before the show even aired. They simply followed her to whatever fandom she chose to participate in. If she never joined the steven universe fandom, I'm 90% sure they still would of harrassed her regardless because her haters are special kind of crazy. I hope Zamii is doing better now though...

That's just my ten cents.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, some fandoms will have what I like to call the "Out, damned spot!" moment(s).

The Zamii incident will always be the SU fandom's, regardless of how it all started, because that's where all the shit hit the fan. (Not to mention several large online news sites, albeit geek culture related ones, reported on it, too)

Meanwhile, at the beginning of the week, the Wander Over Yonder fandom succeeded in getting one of theirs to commit suicide. But nobody's talking about that because the fandom doesn't have a "toxic" reputation or biased hatedom.

this show is so over rated and mediocre, and everyone losing their minds over it makes me feel like "The Emperors new clothes"

BUT i get it because there aren't a lot of other cartoons out there like it.

So people get passionate. But i feel like more than being a solid show it's just ticking off boxes of acceptance. it always feels very hollow to me. It looks like it's deep, but the water is 2 inches.

I want more shows with queer characters and female characters out the wazoo, but this show is soooo just
okay.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You're one of the people who watched a few early episodes and wrote the whole thing off. It's so easy to tell.

I don't care about how SJ shows I watch are, and Steven Universe is by far the best cartoon for its age group that's come out in years.

Good news, the same blog did a follow-up post and doesn't appear to have gotten any hate for it. They're back to posting as normal now.

Post, if you're interested: http://fantheoriesandfoodporn.tumblr.com/post/145784402454/why-garnet-should-not-break-up

(Despite the title, they're not taking back their opinion -- if anyone who gave them hate read the full original post, they never actually wanted Garnet to break up permanently.)

Sadly, this seems to happen to most of the 'big' Tumblr fandoms. The Overwatch fandom has already managed to prove that it's a steaming bag of shit as well.

This kind of constant needing to find something to be shitty about and dress it all up in SJW talk is what drives me batshit about fandom. It isn't just SU, for sure.
