Idk if I would call it toxic masculitity personally, but I definitely do understand where the person was coming from?

Like, there is the focus on the extreme violence, that happens in very... gratuitous ways, like in that scene where he beats that monster up with his fists. I mean, it is a God of War game, so that might be expected, but that doesn't mean people can't criticize it.

And then there is the relationship with his son, which has a very rough tone and (in the scenes we saw at least) focused pretty much only on strength and killing as important skills. And then at the end there is that moment, where Kratos can't even put his hand on his sons shoulder in the tinest possible gesture of affection, because idek feelings are weak?

Needless to say, I didn't like the trailer very much.

It's a violent game, what did you expect? Kratos frolicking thru a field?

It's a trailer, it isn't going to show the child's whole upbringing. Also, strength and killing (ie the ability to hunt and defend yourself) are pretty important in that kind of society. His son can't grow up to be an accountant.

This is a fictional game that contemporary people are literally creating, not a window into some real past

Motherfucker if I hear one more thing about how this is justified by the necessities of a society that doesn't exist!

SA

and the fact that it's a violent video game is hardly a DEFENSE against the idea that it could be implicated in toxic masculinity!!!!

Look, I said, I knew that violence was expected. And tbh I don't mind some violence, but I felt that the violence in this was pretty over the top and unnecessary. Like, most of the scenes did feel like violence for the sake of masculine power fantasy. Idek if I would say that that is specifically bad, it's just something I am definitely not intrested in. (And tbh, that mainstream gaming has way to much of. Like, if it's not harmful, at least it's boring.)

And for the son: No, they couldn't show his entire upbringing. But they did have a choice of what they were going to show. Also the relationship they showed did not seem like it was full of open affection or anything. Look, I think that they meant for Kratos to be a loving if worried parent, it's just that by having him be so emotionally distant and rough, they reinforced the idea that emotions are weakness (which is part of toxic masculinity).
