The result of the artist trying to deal with the death of his rock idol by treating himself to some of his favorite pie, then saying "Fuck this pie I'm getting drunk," so he did, and accidentally wrote a song while he was at it

Reminds me of my dad.

On that note, this song always read like a lament of the death of Americana and the ideals of a generation turning over into a modernized world. To a lesser extent it's about the commercialization of music before that commercialization really even began to kick in, but on a larger scale it's mourning the loss of an era in culture.
