I think Martin Freeman is an excellent Bilbo, one of the best (few good?) things about those movies, but then I really like him in general. Is he too old for the part? I think in the books he mentions he was sort of middle aged for a Hobbit, but in Tolkien's time middle age was probably a few years younger than now. So, like 40-ish? That would fit with MF.
