I feel like shows themselves get more of a pass with repeated names, but yeah, fic doesn't need to try to act like reality by including repeat names. Authors can expect that anyone into the fandom enough to read fic will recoginze a lot of one-off characters and get confused.

At this point, though, I don't know that there ARE any names that haven't been used. At least, not without going into super-rare, get-your-OFC-accused-of-being-a-Sue territory.

OFCs, in general, are just an accusation-of-suedom waiting to happen.

I don't see this much, but I believe it would bother me as well. It isn't a horrible offense, it just... Feels kind of lazy and confusing.

(Says the person who is shit at creating names. Even for game characters, it takes me a while to find something I like.)

The Amy Pond on spn happened because the author of the episode is a fan of Doctor Who. So at least that was on purpose.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
"The author is a fan" doesn't actually make it better.

I love repeat names, because it happens so god damn often in real life, but almost never in fiction. It gets a little ridiculous when you have a character called John, Sam or Jess or something and in 10 seasons of a TV show revolving around them they never meet anyone else with that name, unless it's a specific plot point.

This. I remember being in grade school and having to be differentiated from the two other s in class by our last initials. Hell, one of my friends and I have the exact same first and middle names, even.

I think for common names like Jim, Sarah, and Steve it is acceptable. But it helps if you lampshade it.

I find this secret funny in the light that even RTD re-used names.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Come over to the Tolkien fandom, where reused names are Serious Business (here's looking atcha Glorfindel and Gelmir).

Unless it's Gondor. Seriously, take a look at the lineage of kings and the Stewards and you get several Elven names repeating - like Turgon and Ecthelion (Denethor's father and grandfather).

Though I found it annoying that DoS had a random minor Elf named Elros. It felt like disrespect to Elrond.

I can think of two instances where I was really confused with a fic because there was an OC with the same name as a fairly significant tertiary/background canon character and it wasn't immediately obvious that the OC wasn't that character. Otherwise I don't really care in canon or fic if names get re-used.

there are too many Amandas in Star Trek.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I can only think of two! (Spock's mother and the Q girl.) I had more Amandas than that in my 50-person high school graduating class.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-21 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
those were the two most obvious ones but there were a lot of red shirts and other minor Amandas.
