Never heard of the series, but I like the cover art.

I'll be glad when the mega dark trend in YA/NA is over!

I don't know this series, but I'm definitely not going to check it out.

I looked up more about the author, and it looks like she might agree! She says she felt "confined" in the bleak dystopian setting, and her next book is a bright and cheerful fantasy novel for middle schools. http://www.ew.com/article/2016/02/01/tahereh-mafi-furthermore

That cover art is...something. Can't decide if I love it or hate it but sort of leaning towards the former?

Anyone read this? Would rec y/n?

I tried to read it and couldn't finish the first book. I got maybe 75 pages in before I just realized how much I absolutely hate the main character and the writing style was just not my thing at all. IIRC, it was a first person and the narrator was super unreliable (worse than Hunger Games).

The cover art is really pretty. But there are so many other better YA books I've read lately that I don't have the patience for terrible ones.

I think it would probably be good if you didn't have my specific set of squicks. (I'm the anon who can't handle media involving mind control, and I guess this sort of emotional manipulation hit the same buttons for me.) It reminds me a lot of The Hunger Games, but I feel like it's a lot more direct, if that makes any sense. Katniss was already hardened to the way her world worked, whereas the MC of this book is a raw bundle of pain, loneliness, and righteous anger at the people who took away everything.

(Now I'm wondering if I should try to work through it again. I loved Tokyo Ghoul, and Shatter Me has the same Kafkaesque sense that something about the world is fundamentally wrong and needs to be set right.)

Yeah, I'm hung up on the cover art too. I think I'm leaning towards hating, though. Having the whole set of eyes would just be a bit too much, imo.
Then again, I always preferred cover art that had a scene on it, than this "dramatic symbol" trend we have now. When I was younger, I used to love looking at the covers of books and trying to guess what was going on in that scene, and when we'd get to it.

That sounds very unpleasant.

I started to read this and it was just... blech. I got this whole weird domestic abuse vibe from the main guy and the little bit that I did read made it sound like you were supposed to be okay with the way he was treating her.

I noped really hard out of the first book.

Totally agreed. I love an interesting villain.
