Hahah when I first heard it I was a little dubious, like "yeah ok I'll pander to your pet peeve, buddy, whatever" but as time wore on it really exposed just how much of our historical (mis)understanding is grounded in the perception of nation-states as actors in and of themselves. I mean, like the anon above, everyone says that no, of course they don't literally think that - and I'm sure they don't, consciously - but when you answer a question with "because it was in (insert country here)'s interests" and in fact it was contrary to the vast majority of the people in that country's interests, and even their desire, simply because the small group in power at the time backed that action, you've misrepresented history entirely.

Avoiding using the term "Western" was really fucking hard, too. But once you did, and the radically different motivations, ideas, and end goals of the various European/North American actors becomes even more clear.
