Sounds like he may have gotten out to check the mail or open a gate? The io9 link says it was in neutral, so maybe it's a manual shift and he forgot to put the parking break on (although if his driveway was steep like it says, it's hard to believe the car wouldn't have started rolling before he even got out, unless it's flatter where the car was initially?) Either that or he's one of those people who drive automatic and never use the emergency break, for some reason.
