fandom annoyances

[personal profile] ketita 2016-06-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Because on one of my facebook groups everybody is reccing Name of the Wind and I fucking hate that book so much but I'm not going to march into the thread and yell Y'ALL HAVE SHIT TASTE, so here I am telling F!S that once again I am baffled by the multitudes of people who like Name of the Wind and I hate that book a lot.

How are your fandom spaces looking?

For a moment I had that confused with The Shadow of the Wind and I was sad. But I've never gotten around to Name of the Wind and have no opinion on it.

don't read it it's shitty faux-dark overpowered blatant wish-fulfillment only also boring. I haven't read a Mary-Sue that bad since Mary Sue herself.
I honestly have very little positive to say about that book. Even the magic system is sort of inconsistent and weird.

Right now just how inactive it is. It was very active a few months ago, but it seems to have died down a lot.

One of my fandoms is throwing a tantrum because the creators shut down a couple fan blogs for reasons that make perfect sense and they (the fandom) are aggressively ignoring the context.

I follow their twitter, so that's all I saw of it. From what I read there, they were probably right to do it but all of it sounded a little foot-in-mouth ( for example xample: filing a complaint with tumblr before the blogs put up the disclaimer, then they put the disclaimer up but by then it was too late because the complaint was already made),

I feel like it could have been handled better by both sides.

Heh, Name of the Wind. Had it recced a few times and even had it in my hands at the store Hut fortunately, I read a few passages and did not buy it after that. Really not my thing.

I'm a bit annoyed at parts of the Kylux fandom. With a character like Hux, it is difficult to stay IC because there isn't that much canon material to go on. But there are several pretty popular AU versions that just endlessly annoy me with their randomness and complete disconnect from any kind of canon depiction.

DA fandom is continuing it's endless cycle of wank by wanking about perceived injustices in OTHER canons, now.

I didn't like it either, it's a very obvious male fantasy and as a woman I couldn't care less about it.

Re: fandom annoyances

[personal profile] ketita 2016-06-24 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's also not even GOOD male power fantasy! It's too long, the plot meanders endlessly and doesn't tie together very well, it's inconsistent, and just plain kind of boring.

Steven Universe

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-06-24 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow Greg/Jasper has become an omnipresent ship, and I have no idea how.

Re: Steven Universe

(Anonymous) 2016-06-24 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think the logic is that Marty implies that Greg's into big women, and Jasper's big.

The unending saga of US fans thinking that the rest of the world has exactly the same attitude to race as them. Oddest one I've seen lately was someone implying that the DA2 fandom dislikes Sebastian because he's not white, and I'm like... he's not?

Pfff. People didn't like Sebastian because he's an overzealous religious stick-in-the-mud at best and a warmongering idiot at worst. And he's obviously white.

that reminds me that a guy I know basically forced me to borrow NotW because it was his favorite book and I just had to read it and that was like 5 years ago and I still have it and I haven't read it nor returned it and every time I go in the closet where it sits I see it and remember and feel slightly ashamed even though I am pretty sure he has forgotten by now

THANK YOU. My BF keeps trying to get me to read this, but the protagonist is such an insufferable Stu. I don't get it at all.

Re: fandom annoyances

I really loved the world building and the supporting characters. I don't mind high-powered protagonists if they're colourful and feel human.

And in the first book it felt like there was a faintly self-deprecating tone -'yeah, I was an arrogant tit back then, and there are details appearing in this story that I totally misinterpreted at the time.'

It just reeeeeeeally lost everything I liked about the first book in the second, and the plot felt like it was going in circles, to boot.
