I picture the protagonist as more likely to be female because it's easier for me to believe that random strangers would open up with their personal issues and lives to a woman than... yeah, a big bald man or something.

Salvatore is late 80s and early 90s fantasy. He's very much not 70s or 80s fantasy. But I do agree that (a) the Drizzt stories are mostly terrible and (b) they go to a lot of root problems with fantasy of that era. There's really no reason to ever read them.

I don't think it's weird, OP. You're not alone.

Those were my exact thoughts: they were originally his ex-wife and son instead of his sister and nephew. They just don't interact like a brother and sister to me. That always rang false. So I attributed it to "either they changed it, or I'm nuts".
