The argument is probably that they're contributing to normalizing it by adding to the number of fics depicting it. Or maybe the characters seem too sympathetic even if the author states that it's wrong so they think there's some unconscious bias or unintended implications.

Excuse me, I'm in one of my moods where I want to dissect every argument to try to figure out where they came from. It's like a puzzle. :D

I've always wondered about the 'contributing to normalizing it' argument. It seems very flawed to me. Especially for things like rape or abuse (male or female) where for a very long time it was something that was not discussed like if people ignored it hard enough it would cease to exist.

I kind of feel like if it's addressed probably and not glorified, bringing problematic things into the spotlight doesn't seem like a terrible thing.

And it's okay, I don't mind dissection! Er... of arguments. Please do not dissect your fellow commenters. You'll ruin the furniture.

Well there's the old argument about war movies that there's no such thing as an anti-war film because in making it dramatic and entertaining enough for people to want to watch it you're glorifying it. I could see that argument repurposed for rape.

But I agree with you that it's better to make people face the reality that these things happen than to not address them at all.

When rape of women isn't overdone in comparison to other brutal realities, I'll believe that it has anything to do with constructive conversation. I agree with the general point that showing something doesn't condone it, but rape I'm convinced is in some weirdly cavalier category for a lot of writers where it's hardly something they would condone but definitely have never contemplated the reality of.
