Quick question

(Anonymous) 2016-06-25 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Where has this fad of using the word "red" as a euphemism for blood come? Why can't people say "I saw some blood" instead of "I saw some red", or similar phrases? Have we come all over squeamish for some reason?

I heard my niece's friends saying this, and its been on a few of the tv shows they watch (don't ask me what the shows are, they are about rich pouty teens doing whatever rich pouty teens do).

I have never seen this fad. Where is it happening.

Never heard of it. I've heard 'seeing red' as a euphemism for being really angry, but never as a replacement for blood.

I know Shaun of the Dead (which was pretty quotable) had the popular line "you've got some red on you" but this is the first I've heard of it being an actual fad.

Is it about period blood? Because if we're in a public place, I can see discreetly telling a friend she's got some red on her pants. That's the only thing I can think of.

"Seeing red" means anger, to me, not actual blood.

Whut?

That isn't a fad at all. But it should be, I like it. It's LESS squeamish to be bleeding all over the place and be like, 'nah, just some red, baking soda'll take care of it'.

I want to say this started with vampire romance novels?

I mean I know I have seen some fiction say stuff like "I saw a quick flash of red" when its indicating that something is happening very fast and there is blood but the narrator barely had time to process that

but not really outside that context

isn't that like "heat" for firearms? like, gang- or military language for stuff these groups often deal with?
