Reddit and tumblr are both very normal websites. There are crazy people in the bowels of both, but they aren't the norm and frankly I rarely encounter them on either site and I'm active on both.

The OPs analysis might be true in some fandoms, but not the ones I'm active in on either site. *shrug*

In fact I'd argue that far more in depth analysis goes on at reddit (in between the memes) because the format is 1000% better for it than tumblr's which by nature makes a discourse almost impossible.
