Where are you on F!S that doesn't discuss the failings and flaws of male characters????

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)

Spending time with kids who are on Reddit all the time made me far more sympathetic to the whole SJW campus culture thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, maybe I should try spending more time on Reddit for a while...

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe you should ignore Reddit if you can't deal with their bullshit?

Tumblr and Reddit deserve each other.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You are in the wrong subreddits.

IA 100% but you're trying to bring context to people allergic to it

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is that people who are baffled and irritated by tumblrinas think the tumblrinas are reacting to perfectly normal, decent, sane people who may have occasional problematic opinions once in a while.

When actually, the tumblrinas are usually reacting to the bowels of reddit.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the tumblrinas think the bowels of reddit are normal, average dudes. They are not. Both are overreacting.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Amusingly, for me it's kinda the other way around. Seeing all the policing, toxicity and alarmist screeching on tumblr, together with the hatred for anything connected to fact checking and all the double standards of "this hateful behaviour is okay when we do it" sometimes makes me want to support the anti-sjw side just out of spite.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds very natural. People hypercorrect in response to perceived failings in lots of areas of life.

Stuff gets taken too far on all sites, just in different ways. Though I've never actually been on Reddit except for AMAs in years.

Yep. I go on reddit once in a while, and some subreddits are better than others, but every site has its issues. None of them are without fault, so it's important to find a place that you feel comfortable with.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I spend a lot of time on both websites. When I come across a massive pile of shit on one, I definitely get more sympathetic towards the loudmouths on the other.

I think tumblr might win out for me more often because it's easier to filter yourself away from ridiculous people of whatever persuasion. You can follow some people and ignore others and still expose yourself to a broad range of people within a fandom. Whereas with reddit, there's probably only one, maybe two subreddits around for any given fandom. If a handful of assholes are active posters and commenters, it's much harder to avoid them.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda feel the same way. It may be easier to have discussions on reddit, but on the other hand, it's also way easier to flitter out assholes on tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
My god yes. If I want to read about my male faves, I can find tons of quality discussion on either Reddit or Tumblr. For my female faves, there will always be stuff on Tumblr, while Reddit is a crapshoot.

Not to say anything about other flaws and virtues of each site.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
May get some shit for this but I agree with you OP. It's why I don't really care whenever it seems like female characters have big and defensive fan followings. I've had my favorite female characters litterally (and I mean litterally) get shit on or ignored just because they're women, and I've been accused of being a fake fan for even daring to cosplay as them.
So damn right I'm going to stan for them hard. I'd rather a female character have obnoxious stans then a hater following imo.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-29 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I like even handed discussions but I would much rather see too much fangasming than too much hating.

Don't tear other characters down to make your fave look good and you're okay by me.

Female characters' rabid fans are worse than rabid haters. I've been on the receiving end of both sides. Haters mostly leave regular fans of the characters they hate alone, but stans hunt down and bite the head off anyone who less than worships their flawless queen goddess.

At first I didn't agree with you. Thinking about it more, I halfway agree. It's what others have said: it depends on where you're looking.

Like, /r/asoiaf. There was a secret yesterday complaining about it. It's not all that bad, but you're more likely to see, say, the "Dany is crazy and entitled but Jon and Stannis are perfect leaders and anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong" on Reddit than on Tumblr.

But maybe you've accepted that you're a grown-ass woman who still likes brightly-colored talking ponies as much as you did when you were a little girl, damn it. It's not hard to avoid the clop material, and it's easy to find tons of positive discussion about a cast that's almost entirely made of female characters.

Reddit, like tumblr and 4chan, is not a monolith. Everything depends on the subs and boards you browse much like tumblr is dependent on the tags you follow and filter and culling your dashboard.

However, I do understand your point of each of them (+4chan) being reactionary towards each other. I figure at times it's just to be contrary for the sake of it.

Reddit and tumblr are both very normal websites. There are crazy people in the bowels of both, but they aren't the norm and frankly I rarely encounter them on either site and I'm active on both.

The OPs analysis might be true in some fandoms, but not the ones I'm active in on either site. *shrug*

In fact I'd argue that far more in depth analysis goes on at reddit (in between the memes) because the format is 1000% better for it than tumblr's which by nature makes a discourse almost impossible.
