Media with all male characters:

(Anonymous) 2016-06-29 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think these are designed to appeal to men ("Girls are gross, we hate them get them off my screen") or appeal to women ("Lots of hot men! Being manly and sexy. Something for the moms!")

Depends on the work itself...men might very well have that thought towards Magic Mike for instance, but I think that was made more with women / nonstraight men in mind.

It depends on the show. Lumping "every show with all male characters" into one group is as idiotic as lumping "every show with all female characters" into one group.

It appeals to both demographics in different ways, and depending on the way the narrative plays (including different ways in the same story).

It's also always fascinating to me the difference in the way that the industry does sex appeal for men and women

Ooooh, this sounds interesting. what is it?

1. At least two female characters
2. who talk to one another
3. about something other than a particular order of Catholic monasteries?

I guess it depends on whether it's a story that happens to have all male characters, or something that sexualizes the characters.

Both categories exist so it depends on what specific audience the work is trying to appeal to.

It can't be neutral? Like, the point of a piece of media is to tell a story, not to titillate?

Sure it can. Lots of times it isn't, especially EG mainstream TV shows.

My experience with all-male fiction in America is that it's mostly meant to appeal to men. All-male fiction that appeals to women is more of a thing in Japan.

I think American media tends to regard it as a secondary demographic generally, especially in prime time and blockbuster type stuff.

It's a very atavistic tendency - you know, once the man's home at night, he'll decide what to watch and the women will just come along, that kind of thinking.

Sometimes it's both

Though I think the appeal to men is more of the "here are other men doing things you wish you could do". If a show has guys shooting, driving fast, being heroic, etc., but also has quite a few shirtless shots and a couple of very sweet scenes, then it is probably designed to appeal to men, but they are aware of and want to also have a female audience.

*Ahem* Gay guys. Granted, we are not a large audience. Five or less percent of the male population is not big, even though we're very visible (and won't go anywhere so stuff it, homophobes.) But do realize that a lot of gay guys are working behind the scenes on those shows. We slip in our homosexy when we can. Also, straight men don't realize that they respond to the homoerotic stuff too, especially those men who are secure in their sexuality. No, they're not going to go out and get pounded in the butt or go pound any butts, but there is a level or eroticism in hyper-masculine works that all men want. Usually, it's a desire to BE erotic themselves. What dude doesn't want to be sexy?
