Sorry OP.

I agree with you to an extent, having been a musical theatre kid... The problem is, if someone is not trained they can't actually tell who has a good voice. They hear someone even vaguely able to stay in tune and think "Oh how wonderful!" and that's about it; they can't tell when someone is obviously straining and they don't know the difference between singing styles. You don't even have to be able to sing particularly well for most shows these days, let alone being a musician.

Perfect example: Idina Menzel's Oscars performance of Let It Go was pretty poor (maybe she over rehearsed, maybe it was nerves, who knows) but everyone was eating it up for days after.

Wait, you sing?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-06-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! Used to be way better at it before the ol' puberty change, but I can still carry a tune.

Don't suppose you want to provide evidence?

Oh boy I don't have any evidence. I don't even have a mic lol.

"Let it Go" always sounds out of tune to me but I guess I'm taking crazy pills.

It's just kind of an odd song as far as the arrangement goes. It does its job as being something different from the usual Disney fare, but despite how much people love it I really think it's one of the weakest showstoppers to come out of any major release in the past several decades.

I'm completely underwhelmed by it too, but doing music on a strictly low-level hobbyist basis, I can't articulate why. Watching that life performance reminded me how FAST that song is, though - can't be easy putting all that vocal power in at that tempo :/

I could listen to it fifty times without having the slightest urge to sing along but clearly a generation of little girls would disagree. *shrug*

You're not on crazy pills. Idina Menzel's voice has gone to hell, ever since she abused her voice during her "Wicked" days. She was such a great singer back during her "Rent" days (not the film, but the actual stage show).

(Anonymous) 2016-07-01 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, seriously? I cringe listening to her on the Rent OBC because she's definitely not supporting the sound properly. If anything, I thought she sounded better during Wicked (still needs better support).

(Anonymous) 2016-07-01 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. She sounded fantastic in Rent and Wicked, but now you can hear that she's totally wrecked her voice.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-07-01 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated Rent lol (yeah, I know, hand in my queer musical theatre card and get out of the club), so I never really noticed. I definitely thought she was more talented in Wicked, but yeah. It seems really clear to me that she isn't taking care of her pipes.

Drink all the lemon juice in the world, girlfriend, but it's not a substitute for proper rest.

OP

Oh god, I just realized how right you are, and that's so depressing. I'm very slightly above average as a singer (like, best in my community college class but no where near good enough to be in a professional production. Or at least that's what I thought until reading your comment. Maybe I should send in that audition tape for Hamilton after all...no, I'm kidding myself) but I know my own limitations and have enough training to hear it in others. I don't mind people enjoying music for what it is but I get like, Simon Cowell season 1 about singers who are only hurting themselves and encouraging others to do so.

Like Idina: I listened to that performance and wondered how on earth she managed to even keep her voice if she sang so badly. I can't even watch normal performance videos of Wicked because she strains so hard during the end of Defying Gravity. And yet every comment was about how wonderful she is. Can no one else hear her vocal chords snapping?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-07-01 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... people can't hear it, but oh my god it physically hurts me to listen to her because I can imagine how her throat is going to feel the next day.

On the other hand, the actual track for the movie doesn't have those issues, so I have to wonder if she just doesn't give herself enough time to rest or something.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-01 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, as a singer, I felt her performance of Let It Go in the movie wasn't that good either. You could hear that she was really straining for those high notes and on the whole I didn't think she did that well with it... but again, everyone ate it up.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-07-01 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, it wasn't really great, but it wasn't bad either. It was what most professionals I think would call "successful" in that she manages to emote and there aren't any problems with diction, no problems with tempo (hoooo boy, unlike the Oscars performance)... but it's clearly reaching beyond what she's comfortable with.

It sort of fits in with a lot of the other Disney roster, but yeah. Not the best.
