I felt like time spent with Healy this season, when there were so many other compelling characters, was time profoundly misused. His backstory is sad and all, but they've spent three seasons building him up as an odious, pig headed, absolutely queasy person; a racist, sexist, homophobic, self absorbed, dangerously stubborn guy. I'm glad the show gave him the impetus and opportunity to seek help, but I'd have happily traded his scenes for Taystee and Poussey having some screen time together, or for Sophia and Gloria, or Daya, or Tiffany, or Cindy and Alison discussing religion for real......or almost anyone, basically.

I disagree - I always felt sorry for Healy in that pathetic kind of way, where on one hand he is terrible, but on the other, he's just... sad. I think he's been built that way since season 1 - with the Russian wife who hates him, and being constantly put down by everyone. I really want him to change for the better. I like that they include him, I just want something to happen to him that isn't a continuation of making him a sad, pathetic, pitiful jerk.

I'm fine with Healy improving his life, I just feel like after three seasons of building him up into such an asshole they tried way too hard to make us like him. There are a lot of difficult to like or otherwise complicated characters on OITNB who haven't been nearly so totally established as garbage.

I just think the formula has been the same since season 1. He's always been pitiful, and for me, I tend to feel badly for sad characters pretty easily even if they're jerks, but it's been that way since season 1. I'm surprised someone would only start to be falling for that formula this season, it's very much on par for him to have a sob story background, his personal life has always been sad.
