In the rare case that an abortion is the only way to save the mother's life, it should be paid for by the tax payers. If it's not to save one of the two lives; no, we should not be forced to pay for it.

Ah, then in this case, you don't really believe that a fetus is the same as a child. Otherwise, you're just choosing which life to save and which to murder. Why should we save the mother and not the fetus in this very rare circumstance? If a life is a life, what does it matter which one lives and which one dies? The doctor should probably flip a coin, right?

Or perhaps you understand at a certain level, even if you're not yet conscious of it, that there's a slight difference. Maybe not even so slight.

What do you think about the assertion that the Hyde Amendment in America has prevented 1 000 000 abortions? Do you believe it, and if so, is that not evidence that not subsidising abortions do prevent abortions?

I'm not American, and very grateful for it, as the American medical system would have long ago killed me for other reasons.

I doubt it's prevented that many. It's hard to tell the rate of illegal activity, but it's certainly increased the number of women trying to self-abort. It's almost certainly murdered lots of poor women. It's also likely condemned more children to a poverty cycle—medical debt is a critical issue in the US, and most women who abort pregnancies already have children to support.

So what do I think of it? It's cruel, it's sickening, and it's hypocritical given that most Americans don't seem to mind their tax dollars going to drone-bomb babies in foreign countries.

A society that seriously wants to combat abortion can take great steps to make giving birth a more appealing option. I will gladly pay for that.

Fine, great. I'm all for better maternal supports. My taxes go to that too, and it's awesome. However, I am cursed with a fully functioning uterus and never want to be pregnant, and I would literally cut a fetus out myself with a chainsaw before I'd give birth if need be. I take every measure to make certain that never happens, but just in case, I am grateful that my government is a sensible one.

No, the medical condition determines who can be saved.

I am very sorry that you would feel that level of hatred towards your fetus, that you would not want to protect and nourish it.

I hope you're successful in your efforts and a fetus never ends up with you as its caretaker, and vice versa, you with the burden of it.

idk why you keep dodging their point about many women resorting to dangerous, often fatal back alley abortions in the absence of being able to procure a safe one, especially since it relates pretty strongly to your point about the hyde amendment

Nothing is forcing these women to resort to maternally unsafe abortions.
They willingly decide to take the risk.

"People will do it anyway" is not a very good reason to make something legal.

Any civilized society should instead make every possible effort to reduce the demand for abortion.

You sweet summer child.

Please never have children, I'm afraid they'd catch the misogyny.

At least my children would grow up knowing they were safe in my womb. 😊

If all things being equal, you could save one, would you choose the mother or the fetus? If you still say the mother, you are beginning to understand. If you would flip a coin, I at least admire your consistency.

I have no hatred towards a fetus, mine or anyone else's. I have no feelings about random, hypothetical fetuses whatsoever. I do not wish to be pregnant.

I hope that your opinion of these matters develops as you get older and gain perspective and empathy for uterus-bearing people in varying degrees of difficult position. I hope, even more deeply, that this perspective does not come at the cost of you or any of your loved ones finding themselves in said difficult position.
