Wow. I also have Crohn's and I've basically had diarrhea for the last five years. Not even taking something like Imodium (for if i'm going to spend the day at a museum or something) helps much at all.

It sucks to go to the bathroom ten (or more) times a day. Crohn's sucks. (I also don't have a gallbladder anymore, so...that doesn't help.)

My gastroenterologist has been prescribing Opium for my Crohn's for the last twenty years. I take it along with an immune suppressor and cholestyramine powder, and it helps keep me out of the bathroom so I can at least go see a movie or hang out with friends or go to a museum.
I can sympathize with the ten+ trips to the bathroom, though, 'cause I still have those days. Do you have a small library in your bathroom? I sometimes wish that a HGTV show would redo my bathroom with bookshelves and a TV.

Opium? Like, from poppies opium? That seems...odd.

I wish I could figure out something that would help, it's amazingly annoying. Yeah, i *always* have a book in there. And at least two cats, though gods know why they'd want to follow me in there all the time, can't be nice.

That would be awesome! Hehe.

Yep, Opium Tincture USP (Deodorized) is anhydrous morphine that works to slow the long muscles of the intestines. The dose is pretty low (I take 12 drops per day in water when I need it), and it is really good to have when I know I might have a day where I can't always be in the bathroom. I do drink it out of a martini glass for effect.
I hope you can find something, too. The opium has helped a lot...much better than steroids.
And my two cats love to come into the bathroom with me, too. One of them lays in the sink and the other lays on my feet. Cats are weird sometimes.

Interesting. I must research. :)

Today, i have the dog in there, too, since she hates fireworks/loud noises. She's basically been glued to my side for three days, poor thing.

Not at all. One of the effects of opium is to slow down the digestive system, giving your intestines more time to absorb water from your stool so it doesn't come out as diarrhea. People who abuse opiates usually end up horribly constipated because of this. Immodium is also an opiate derivative, albeit a relatively mild one.

I get the feeling you're not in the US? Opium is a VERY BAD DRUG OMG. ;)

I need *something*, that's for sure. It's a fucking giant pain.

I'm the first anon who answered (not the one above here) and I'm in the US. Not many doctors prescribe opium tincture because of the tendency of patients to over medicate. I'm still on the same dose I've had for the last fifteen years, so my doc isn't worried that I'll drink the whole bottle at once...I love that he's so laid back. But, yeah, it's pretty cheap and pretty effective, but it's a BAD DRUG so let's not let people with major gastrointestinal problems use it.

I had a couple of feet of my intestine removed years ago, and it's made a huge difference. I hope you don't have to go through that. I didn't have to have a bag, but if they take out any more, I might have to have one.
I hope you can get some kind of help; nobody should be held prisoner in the bathroom!

Yeah, who knows. They get so freakin' touchy about that shite. I had a 'push the button for more' morphine thing in the hospital and they were all 'omg, you're not using it much!!' Well, no - it's a powerful drug and it makes me sleep. I don't *need* it much.

I had surgery for Crohn's damage about four (three?) years ago. Took out a couple/three feet of intestine and a foot or so of colon, gallbladder (lots of gallstones) and my appendix, which apparently was all twisted up with some intestine and a bunch of scar tissue. Had a temporary ostomy for about 3 months while that all healed. Had to self-inject some medication or other for two of those months because i was becoming dehydrated from losing so much liquid. Got the second surgery to hook everything back up and the doc said he didn't see an signs/inflammation, so hopefully it's kind of in check, though who knows. I haven't had any symptoms like i used to have, so.... *fingers crossed*

Now that i have insurance (finally!) i'm thinking of going back to the doc for a check up/evaluation, just to be sure, and seeing about *something* to make this less of an issue. I'll have the list of stuff on hand to see if they would recommend something along the lines of the tincture to help.

NAYRT, and so far as I know I don't have IBS or anything, but opiates in general will cause constipation and also sometimes nausea.

Having never taken opiates where it would make me notice (flat on my back with a temporary ostomy doesn't count. :) ), I did not know that. Interesting. (Though, thinking back, the 'Worst Toilet in Scotland) scene in Trainspotting should have clued me in.....)
