I agree with you: mere background or hardly mentioned stuff doesn't need to be tagged. But if you don't fandom police hit you in the comments with "WHY didn't you tag for THAT? I'm TRIGGERED now and you are so EVUL!"

There's just no way to do this without pissing someone off.

Which is why it would be so helpful to have fields for main pairings and side pairings (and possibly featured characters and mentioned characters), so that people who are ~T~R~I~G~G~E~R~E~D~ by the mere mention of, say, the Trickster or Sam/Jess will know to avoid the fic, but people who are looking for fics specifically about that character or pairing won't see the tag and think "awesome, a fic about my fave" and be disappointed.
