Do you know what aspire means?

If you do, how do you know that? In my fandoms people try and try hard, even if the results are as varying as the fans themselves.

But, say you're right, in what fandom do everyone write half-assed? Sounds like a shitty fandom to begin with. Widen your scope and stop croaking.

Stargate Atlantis
Sherlock
Teen Wolf

A multitude of shitty fandoms.

I like frogs.

In other news, maybe leave some encouraging creative criticism? Some fanfic is always going to be dashes off quickly for funsies, an some will have more effort put into it, but ultimately still be for fun. I think the percentage that reach "heights of creativity" is always going to be kind of low because who has the time? (I also think creative highs aren't super-duper common in profic, either, since getting paid doesn't automatically induce creativity, even if you don't have to hold down a day job. It's just that a lot of creativity has accumulated out of the vast amounts of literature in existence.)

Why would anyone bother to put their best writing into fanfic? Serious question.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-06 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's their favorite hobby and they love writing? Not everyone wants to be a pro, but they can want to do their best anyway.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-06 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Or they might just be wanting to have some fun...

How does investing care in your writing preclude having fun with it?

Nowhere else to put it?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I can sort of get it - for those of us want to be published authors someday, we want the fic to be the best it can be.

Still not sure we should hold our standards to strict levels, though.

I admit that I no longer do it. I used to - I used to work really hard on fanfiction, and I still have a few fics where I experiment with new stuff and put a lot of effort into it. But overall, since I can get away with 85%, and so many well-loved fics are just terrible, I just don't see the point sometimes.
It's not like my 85% is bad. It's just not nearly as rigorous as I'd put into something else. Fewer drafts, less rereads, etc. And sometimes there are plot issues that I just let slide because eh, it's good enough.

85% is more than generous IMO for free entertainment.

I know for me it's because I have no interest in becoming a professional writer, but I love to write and have been doing so since I could first hold a pencil.

Besides, why wouldn't I write my best stories for/about the characters I love most?

Does it aspire to be, though?

Just by numbers, most of it will be mediocre as there is no quality filter.

Also most fanfic writers do it for fun, not for literary credentials.

so it's the nature of the genre, I think.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Do you really think that people who write fanfic are writing it below their threshold of capability? If so, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Serious question: is there are reason you don't think people are aspiring? Maybe they're just not that good, or have different taste than you?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
This idea has paralysed my fic-writing for the past year or so. I used to be incredibly prolific, and now I just second-guess myself, because my writing is okay and quite popular but not QUALITY and therefore I can't bring myself to finish or post anything at all :(

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Channel the spirit of the great professional hacks, anon! Be willing to suck, and suck hard!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Consider writing for less popular fandoms. You can be somebody's port in a storm.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 02:21 am (UTC)(link)

I expect this from professional writers, not from people who write as a hobby.
