What are your career goals?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-06 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Something that you are actually working toward and is potentially feasible. I know y'all want to be pokemon trainers already!

If there's one thing I've realized with a year of grad school under my belt, it's that way more people change course/career in their lives than I ever really realized/thought about. There's always time!

Well I changed careers like 10 times, it's not the change that is the issue lol.

feasible lmao

I am a fickle bastard. A jack of all trades. The red mage. I can never make up my mind, which is why I love acting; each job is different from the next, but it's still the same career path. and it seems to be the only thing I am more than willing to take as far as possible because of that.

I reach for the stars and my head is in the clouds, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I never get stupid with money, I have no kids, not married, I kinda like what I have goin on

I'd just really like to work in and for museums but right now am pretty much locked in to this whole high school teacher thing.

My dream job is to work at a wildlife sanctuary. I've been trying to gain some experience working with a local wildlife rehabilitator while I slowly work on getting a biology degree which I don't really need but refuse to give up on after putting so much time and money into it. I'm looking into internships at sanctuaries that I can apply to once I think I might actually be accepted.

I'm also working on writing. I don't want to depend on it as a career but I'd love to do some writing on the side. I'm slowly getting comfortable with other people reading my stuff after years of it being for my eyes only. I want to submit something to an agent by my next birthday (in January).

Last year I managed to finish my biology degree after taking 50% longer than the standard period of study. You have my sympathies, cough. Sometimes I think back to the last stretch and wonder how the fuck I did it.

Local wildlife rehabilitation sounds cool. Getting work experience is probably the most difficult part though.

Congratulations! I know how frustrating it gets when things go wrong. You should be proud of yourself.

Number one, a published novelist. It's my dream for that to be my full-time career, and be able to support myself from writing alone, but at least it's something that you're never too old to do.

Other than that, my ideal job would be to have a job that actually puts my graduate degree in history to use, that isn't a professor. Working in a museum setting would be awesome. I am sort of working toward that, at least as much as I can without actually getting another degree in museum studies...

right there with you, buddy. what does a museum studies degree even entail???? let me bring my history to your museum I'll figure out the rest as I go

My cousin has a master's in history that's being used working at museums. She seems to really like it. She's also done a lot of playing historical people at historical sites. All part of what she says is called interpretation, explaining history to an audience.

I hope one of your dreams works out for you.

librarian/teacher/museumist/writer

I feel like I'm about a quarter of the way towards a handful of professions but I don't actually have all the requisite degrees/skills for any and I can't make up my mind what I want to do, but ???? my goal is for people to pay me for being a helpful nerd

Basically the epitome of helpful nerd :P

I want to help with storycraft. Like, my ideal job would be to be an editor in charge of molding people fresh out of college. Because right now I'm seeing things that are like they basically storified some tweets. No lead to speak of. No narrative. Just fact after dry-assed present-tense fact.

I'm hoping to be partially retired within about a decade. More time to pursue the things I enjoy.

on the other hand, I still dream of going back to school full-time and changing careers entirely. Moving somewhere exciting and doing something I'm really passionate about. (The logical part of me knows this would be really stupid, since living anywhere is already pretty feasible, I really love my industry, and I have a really good job. The part of me that is perpetually 15 still really wants to be a linguist-psychologist-journalist living in a trendy part of NYC.)

Eventually I want to be an immigration attorney. I'd especially love working in legal services because representing people who can't afford an attorney is something I believe in very strongly. Whether or not someone can stay in this country should not be based on what they can pay.

I want to get a job, preferably part time, as a kitchen hand. Ideally in a bakery. After a period of that, I want to go for an apprenticeship.
I know most people don't fantasise about part-time minimum wage, but I have an anxiety disorder and NO experience with full-time employment, so easing into things would really suit me best.

A bakery could be a really good fit for you. I've worked in one before, and a lot of them have a pre-opening shift that involves baking things up for the opening, which means you only have to interact with any other bakers employed on the same shift, so there's not a lot of variables like having customers introduces.

Well, I'm going to sound like a herb here, but: my main interest is having a steady reliable source of income. If its a lot of money that would be cool, and if I don't have to do total grunt work that would also be cool. So right now I'm mostly moving towards a managerial-type path (in the tech industry) because, you know, its something I can do and the pay is steady and the work is indoors.

Further down the road from there it'd be cool to get to the executive level, cause that's a ton of money, and I know I have the chops for it. But what would really own would be some kind of organizational consultant type thing. My company had a dude come in for that and he was a really interesting chilled out guy. And honestly organizational theory is genuinely fascinating to me and it's sort of where my mind naturally goes to start with, and also it's very people oriented which is cool. Also this dude my company worked with made boatloads of cash which is a nice bonus.

(i also would like to do things like publish novels but I don't consider that a career goal because even if I achieve it I'd never expect to make money off it)

I figure one way or another, I'm going to be doing accounting, so my goal is to do it somewhere that matters. I've tried a bunch of places that seemed worthy, like the hospital that saved my life and a charity that helps wounded veterans, but I've had no luck so far.

I'd love to be an editor (for movies, TV, etc.) but frankly, I don't know where to begin.

Re: What are your career goals?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
From someone who had the same sort of goals but also couldn't figure out where to begin: Do whatever it takes to find out, and when you think you're on the right track, don't let anyone sway you from it. I started by looking at film schools but most just didn't seem like a good fit, and when I found one I thought might work, I let myself got talked out of it before exploring further (a guidance counselor who doubted my ability to get in/pay for it and parents who weren't outwardly discouraging but were never encouraging either, so I really flt alone and discouraged anyway.)

I don't hate my life now or anything but I've never been able to really think about that time period without feeling regret.

Columbia College Hollywood is where I was looking (god, 15 years ago) but I couldn't bring myself to do more than google it to make sure I was giving you the right school.
