Hurricane Katrina? Did the writer out walk it? (That's the first thing that came to my mind but I don't remember if the person that made the comment was a writer.)

Yes, this is about that particular writer. I was recced their most famous fic, liked it, and then learned about the Katrina incident later.

Oh, are you the one writing the movie rewrites? I heard someone recced me on there so I'm guessing that's you. In that case, contact me privately because I'd like to discuss what's happened in the last 11 years.

I liked your fic too (provided you are in fact the person); someone showed it to me and it was really good, and that people still carry this around after 11 years just confuses me. I'm not being a troll or anything--I'm seriously confused as to why people continue to drag this out when I've apologized multiple times and have changed greatly as a person.

So please, talk to me and we'll discuss this. I'm a very different person now. I understand why all of this is upsetting, but I no longer feel the way I did then.

Right after Hurricane Katrina, the person referred to in the secret--a semi-BNF in her fandom--got a lot of well-deserved flak for saying that she had no sympathy for the people who were trapped in NOLA (and worse, in the stadium) because they had ample warning and could have gotten out of the city had they chosen to do so.

When it was pointed out to her that many of them had no cars, she insisted that they could have walked. No amount of explaining that the path of a hurricane is both extremely wide and extremely unpredictable, and that New Orleans is surrounded by swamps full of alligators and water moccasins where the water would be rapidly rising, would convince her that she was wrong.

As for people who had dependent small children, or elderly parents, whom they couldn't leave--they should have abandoned them! "It's called survival of the fittest!"

There was also some sort of nonsense about how it was their own fault if they didn't know how to live off the land, because she had got lost on a hike and she killed a pigeon with a stick or something.

I believe the person in question is on the autism spectrum, but it's possible to be autistic and also a horrible excuse for a human being.

Also, I like the setup of this secret because it makes me think that Lugia wrote some really good fanfic (but also has caused hurricanes).

This is why I try not to learn too much about people who write my favorite fics. When you find out something nasty about them, it just dilutes the fun of reading it. :/

Gods, I remember that wank. In all my years on f_w and its spinoff communities, I don't think I ever saw anyone Not Get It so hard. That wasn't the last time she caused a wankstorm, either. There was also the time when she was supposed to be trading Pokemon with someone, but they lost their internet for twenty minutes and she blew up at them for keeping her waiting.

I haven't been so disappointed in someone whose work I liked in a very long time, and I know from all indications she hasn't changed one bit.

I even hesitate to admitting I liked her fic off anon. It's that poisoned.

Oh my gosh, I remember that one! She would NOT back down that maybe it wasn't the person she was trading with's fault and that clearly they'd done it on purpose to spite her. I think they decided not to bother in the end, and who can blame them.

It's strange to think of how long ago this was. However, you can't really blame people for the fact that 11 years later, this incident is what they still associate with your name. It was pretty...memorable.

There are multiple reasons why. I can understand why you think it's in the past and since you apologized years ago, they should have just dropped it. But that isn't a realistic expectation because of these multiple reasons.
One reason is that after enjoying it fanfiction the reader feels an emotional connection to the author. Then when the author does something that the person finds reprehensible, the reader feels betrayed. Betrayal can be unforgettable, impossible to get over. I had a cat who when she was a kitten we used to swing a shinai - this is a bamboo sword, it makes a recognizable swishy sound when you swing it - we used to swing this sword at her and not hit her. She would sit calmly and not be scared because she trusted us. One time a neighbor kid tried this trick and the sword hit the cat. A betrayal - from then on when she heard the sound she ran away. We apologized to that cat so much but she could never forgive. Normally cats can forgive in case you thought that it was because she was a cat. I've had cats to forgive having their tails stepped on or having forgotten to feed them for most of the day. Emotionally people and other mammals are not that different.
Another reason is that based on your comments here I don't think your apology was probably all that convincing. You seem more bewildered then you do comprehending of why people found it so very wrong. You seem poised to make another such faux pas.
