Star Trek: Beyond

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like in the new movie Sulu will be gay (with a husband and daughter) in a nod to George Takei.

Anyone know what they're going to do about anton yelchin?

Chekov was cute and now we don't get him because some his actor was a douchebag. Are they recasting or what?

I'd assume they will have some throwaway line about him being promoted. I highly doubt they will recast him or kill him off.

And why do you think Anton Yelchin is a douchebag??? By all accounts he seemed like a fantastic guy.

Dying in an accident makes him a douchebag?

No, but failing to RTFM really goes half way there.

Eh. Not thrilled. Sulu liking women was canon in TOS (I know we shouldn't expect the movies to follow the series canon, but it'd still be nice if they tried) and didn't Takei himself dislike people equating him with his character in that way? Making him bi would have been better.

Lots of a things are canon in TOS. Like Kirk's dad being alive. Or all the Vulcans being alive. If they can kill off a whole race, they can change a character's sexuality.

One, I don't think they explicitly said that he's gay rather than bi? They said the character would be in a gay relationship, not that the character was specifically gay.

Two, even if you care about canon, this is an alternate universe version of the character.

Three, fuck canon.

Directly above me: Two people who think reading something is optional if it's in parentheses.

It makes me really sad that George Takei publicly disapproves. I understand his reasoning, but I think there are probably good reasons from a production standpoint and there's something undeniably powerful about a character we already care about being openly gay. (Unless the movie comes out and there's an entirely original awesome character who is unnecessarily straight, in which case I might get out my pitchfork)

In other news this movie comes out on my birthday (and it's a big one) and I'm a trekkie who's been yelling about more LGBT representation in Star Trek for years. So I wasn't very excited about it but now... if the reviews are good I might go see it opening night!

I feel that he might dislike his character being seemingly "reduced" to his real life sexuality (I'm not saying he is Hut it might feel that way). And it's also a bit of tokenism at play "let's make the guy who was played by that gay guy TM gay in the movies" instead of tackling the issue in a different way.

Steven Universe

You know how Steven Universe sometimes does five new episodes in a single week? They're gonna do that for four weeks straight. This is freaking nuts.

Followed by a 2 year hiatus?

The fandom would deserve an immediate cancellation considering they almost succeeded in driving a fellow fan to suicide yet again.

I can't wait until the one with Bismuth, man.

And the fact that she's going to be coming up during one of the monthlong stevenbomb episodes...

AAAAAAAAAAA

(Fuggin...and that she has a history with LAPIS...)

Doctor Who

(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing new and nothing airing, I was just watching a few old episodes recently and got to thinking about it.

So... anything new with Who fans?

Also, discussion question: Who are your favorite companions, and what companion/doctor combos that never happened would you be most interested in seeing? Personally, I'd LOVE to see Donna and the Fifth Doctor, I think they would play really interestingly off each other.

Favorite companions: Donna, Amy, and Clara (but only with 12).

Donna with 9 or 11 or 12 or 4 would be great. Martha with 12.

Re: Doctor Who

(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I really wasn't impressed with Clara when see first appeared in the show. Then when 12 arrived everything just made sense. :)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Donna and Five would be fun, but personally I most want to see what happens if you put Donna and Six in a room together.

I'd love to see Donna and Tegan being shouty together.

Breaking Bad

(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
My friend just got me into this show (late to the party, I know) and I am laughing way too hard at repeatedly attempted murder and body disposal.

Re: Breaking Bad

(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Are you talking the first few episodes? The damage to the plumbing? I admit I had to laugh at some of that, too.

Re: Breaking Bad

Yes, and the drug dealer running into a tree and knocking himself out.
