To actually answer your question, the characters are based on some of the most obnoxious, rich, london suburbanite, 'fashion' people from the 90s. Drugs, alcohol, terrible parenting, trying every fad under the sun.... I cannot overstate how obnoxious these characters are. They are grotesques and brilliant.

Back in the nineties it was pretty ground breaking to see women acting like drunken idiots. Don't know how it's holding up now.

Most of western Europe things weren't nearly as bad as that. Things weren't great, but women had considerably more freedom than you're making out. My maternal Grandmother danced for the French national ballet, my paternal Grandmother fought in the resistance and later became a Chemist. They weren't from any unusual backgrounds, and their life stories were not unusual either. Well, apart from the ballet I guess.
