No, I completely agree with him. Having Sulu "come out" has terrible implications that he explained very well (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/george-takei-reacts-gay-sulu-909154) I'm angry at everyone else involved who went ahead with making his character gay after he asked them not to. The fact they think they know better about what's good representation than an actual gay person, the one who played the character, means they don't have any of the respect they think they have.

+1

Really not wild about everyone getting mad at Takei over this tbh

No. First off, if they had created a gay character everyone would be thinking of that character as a token gay character.

Secondly, why does he think Sulu would be closeted? Other than the three main characters, we don't have any concrete proof of any of the character's sexuality.

We don't know about Scotty's sexuality or family or Chekov's or Dr. Marcus's or Pike's. If they showed up with a child or heterosexual partner, would everyone be going OMG THEY HID THEIR HETEROSEXUALITY FROM US!!!!! HOW DARE THEY???

1) How is Sulu not a token gay character? They looked at their cast, decided they could sacrifice the one played by a gay person originally, boom, token gay character.

2) I think you're misreading his words there. The article says explicitly that Takei "strongly feels a character who came of age in the 23rd century would never find his way inside [the closet]." The implication of the word closeted in the earlier quote, I think, refers to the fact that sexuality is more than who you're dating, and in Takei's mind, Sulu was not just Not Dating a Man all this time, he was living as a heterosexual. It diminishes the meaning of sexuality, and I think it's telling that this "reveal" was conceived by two straight men.

The timeline does diverge a bit late for it to be argued that Sulu would be so dramatically different as to have had his sexuality changed.

So far the only headcanon I got to reconcile this is that Sulu is very sexually fluid in his younger years and gets shaped by that and drifts to one end or another by his older years. Which is... eh.

I see a lot of gay people who can go either way on this particular issue. I'm one.

But, the stark reality is that the Kelvin Timeline movies will not have any original bridge characters. (With the possible exception of a replacement for Chekhov due to Yelchin's death.) Reboot franchises live and die by character name recognition. The choices are to reboot an existing and cast character as LGBTQ, have some blink-and-you'll-miss-it extras in the background, or nothing.
