Is anyone else really really angry at george takai?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought he was cool, but this whole "Sulu is straight because an hold white straight man in the 60's said so" is really depressingly regressive.

Ah the 'old white man' demon. The human race has always gotta have a demographic to demonise, ain't it.

no, i hadn't heard this before to care about and now that i've heard about it i still don't

Don't blame the old white straight man. Roddenberry likely would have loved to put a gay character in his show but he was already under pressure from having positive interracial relationships and other progressive things. He pushed as much as he could in the 60s while still keeping his show on the air.

This isn't the 60's tho. Why keep to his vision when his vision is obsolete?

Don't believe that claim actually. A lot of his views were very of his time - women as walking mattresses for example.

I've never heard anything specific on Roddenberry's views of gay people one way or the other. I think being gay was still considered a mental illness back then, so I don't expect everyone to have been LGBT champions even if they didn't actively hate LGBT people.

I can respect his opinion, but I don't agree with it.

There's a ton of bi erasure going on in discussions about this development.

Or, you know: Maybe he does not want a CHARACTER shaped more after him? The point of acting is well...pretending to be someone you're not.

Re: Is anyone else really really angry at george takai?

Yeah, I don't really think that this is the best idea. I think it's one of those things that Trek needs to address sooner or later because they've talked about every social justice movement of the 20th century in at least one episode except for LGBTQ rights. But given a choice between gay Sulu or nothing, I'll take gay Sulu.

Also Consider that Takei would have spent some time conceiving the character he kept coming back to play, I could see where if it's clashing with his own head canon, he'd have feelings about it.

No, I completely agree with him. Having Sulu "come out" has terrible implications that he explained very well (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/george-takei-reacts-gay-sulu-909154) I'm angry at everyone else involved who went ahead with making his character gay after he asked them not to. The fact they think they know better about what's good representation than an actual gay person, the one who played the character, means they don't have any of the respect they think they have.

I'm not against this reveal, but I actually really appreciate what he's said about it (which isn't just "an old white straight man said it so now I'm mad").

From the BBC:

"I told him [John Cho, who told GT that Sulu would be gay], 'Be imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted'."

He played him as straight. In his mind and the mind of the creators, he was straight. To reveal suddenly that he's been "gay all along," without that affecting the character in any way that would have come up in sixty years, takes a lot of meaning out of that aspect of the character.

I think this incident actually gets at a big problem in straight people's attitudes towards LGBT issues, which is the tendency to think that the most progressive viewpoint is that it "doesn't matter." The first headline I saw about the reveal read "Sulu Is Gay In Star Trek: Beyond and It's Not A Big Deal." But....it is a big deal to be gay. Whether or not it should be in 2016, it is a big deal to be gay, and to act as though all you need to do to write a gay character is take a straight character and slap a same-sex partner on them is a really fundamental misunderstanding of what it means to be gay.

So, yeah. I'm with George on this one.

Not in the least. I think of all people, George Takei has the right to an opinion on this matter - as a gay man, genuine nerd, and the guy who actually played the character.

I think both sides raise good points and I'm not sure I think one side is definitely right or wrong. I understand where they are both coming from. But I'm a bit shallow, I just want more gay characters on screen, especially characters that are developed beyond just being gay. Doesn't mean Takei doesn't raise excellent concerns.

I know this guy called George Takei you might have a problem with though.

George Takei? No, he's entitled to his opinion. And it's not like he said NO Star Trek characters can be gay, he just doesn't believe HIS character should be. You can be for gay rights and for story canon. They don't have to be mutually exclusive.

And to be honest, it seems a little silly to take the character he personally played and deliberately match the sexual preference to his own... it's like, why? And why now? Are they trying to kiss his ass? Are they pandering to someone? Are they looking for attention or hoping someone will look upon their decision and go, "OH, what HEROES these ST writers are! So COURAGEOUS and KIND to turn Sulu gay!" I'm find it a bit suspicious, honestly.

He has respect for the character's creator. What exactly is wrong with that?

I'm not angry at him. I understand why he's annoyed.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Are you a creative person at all?

I think it's totally understandable that Takei would be annoyed by this.

In real life, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were (probably?) straight, but they played Kirk and Spock as in love. (Oh, yeah, they did.)

In real life, Takei is gay, but he played Sulu as straight, to the extent that Sulu had any characterisation at all.

There's an obvious gay (well, bi) representation at the centre of the show, and you do this instead?

Making Sulu gay is silly. It's just as silly as showing Jim Kirk as secretly bald, or revealing that Chekov isn't Russian but just doing a stupid accent!

As on of The Gay Menace myself I totally understand why he'd be uncomfortable with it. Not only was Sulu created and written by someone Takei knew and presumably respected, Takei himself brought that character to life in a certain way.

I've written and drawn straight characters. If someone came along 40 years later and said "hey actually this character that you poured your heart and soul into? This character that defined your entire career? I'm making them gay! Yay representation!" I wouldn't be comfortable with that. I wouldn't be comfortable with them erasing my characters sexuality because that sexuality can inform so much of who they are as people. I'm sure an actor would feel the same way.

I'm not against gay Sulu, I think it's pretty swell that they're finally getting around to including a gay character in a series that was once a progressive powerhouse. But I totally understand why Takei wouldn't be cool with it and I'm really not okay with people being an asshole to a gay actor because he doesn't like hamfisted tokenism to be foisted upon a character he defined.

They only made Sulu gay because Takei is gay.

Don't get me wrong--I fucking love the idea of gay Sulu. It's just that this is a bullshit reason. Go ahead and make any of the crew gay, but don't do it because Takei is popular. Like why not gay McCoy? Doesn't that sound awesome?

I'd be totally with him on making a new character gay instead except... the new movies don't seem great about creating new characters, unfortunately.
