Are you a creative person at all?

I think it's totally understandable that Takei would be annoyed by this.

In real life, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were (probably?) straight, but they played Kirk and Spock as in love. (Oh, yeah, they did.)

In real life, Takei is gay, but he played Sulu as straight, to the extent that Sulu had any characterisation at all.

There's an obvious gay (well, bi) representation at the centre of the show, and you do this instead?

Making Sulu gay is silly. It's just as silly as showing Jim Kirk as secretly bald, or revealing that Chekov isn't Russian but just doing a stupid accent!

It's not a big deal, really, and it's hardly the biggest revision to the original concept in the new movies. It's not even in the top five! But there's no need to be angry at Takei.
