I think putting it in the specific context of Hannibal changes how it has to be read, though.

Well, he IS charismatic, but even if he weren't a cannibal he would still be a serial killer, and an incredibly manipulative, abusive person. He wouldn't be a good boyfriend no matter what; it just isn't in his nature.
