Nice ableism there. Just because someone suffers from a mental illness doesn't mean they'd be abusive.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You are right. Hannibal was not abusive towards Will at all.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The person just said they wanted to date a sociopath. You're ableist for assuming that would mean it'd be an abusive relationship.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, if you say so. I will be the ableist not getting gaslighted by my SO.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You're a bigot. Check your able-minded privilege.

I think putting it in the specific context of Hannibal changes how it has to be read, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they just find Hannibal to charismatic and romantic. A lot of people on Tumblr think he'd be the ideal boyfriend if he wasn't a cannibal.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a serial killer.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if he wasn't a cannibal, he'd still be an abusive psycho.

Well, he IS charismatic, but even if he weren't a cannibal he would still be a serial killer, and an incredibly manipulative, abusive person. He wouldn't be a good boyfriend no matter what; it just isn't in his nature.

Are you for real? Sociopath - does what it says on the tin, and is not a disability. Twit.

Even if it is a disability it still does what it says on the tin. (I'd argue it's not, though.)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a mental illness you bigot.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
No, it isn't, you sociopath.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Google it you daffy cunt

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-07-10 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes it is? What would you call it?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sociopaths are scum of the earth and should all be gassed to death.

No, it really, really isn't. Yrs, a professional who does not need to use Google to know that.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
If it is, which is debatable, it is literally only diagnosed in people who habitually violate the rights of others without remorse. It's actually not bigotry to tell other people to avoid those who are guaranteed to hurt them repeatedly and not care, and it isn't bigotry to label people who hurt others repeatedly and don't care as abusers. If you think that it's not abuse to have your rights violated repeatedly by someone who doesn't care what they do to you as long as it benefits them, then you need to get help as soon as possible.

But the very nature of sociopath is an inability for empathy (and love under the form most people understand it, though obviously there are degrees). Even if a sociopath , for some reason, would want to do what is "right", and want to be in a relationship, and NOT be abusive (which are all big ifs) - it might still not be terribly healthy.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh.

If they're a sociopath, yeah, it does. The diagnostic criteria dovetail near-perfectly with the description of an abuser.

TROLOLOLOLO

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
This has got to be the most Tumblr/4chan argument and counter argument on here.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
A little late here, but whatever.

What's the term when a person says something so abnormal that you can't even tell if they're being serious or not?

Anyhoo, dude, "sociopath" is a not a mental illness. Neither is psychopath, for that matter. The most recent term is "anti-social personality disorder" and that's not a mental illness EITHER. A personality disorder just means you don't know how to act like a nice, normal person and it interferes with your quality of life. It's not on the same diagnostic Axis as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia or even autism.

Regardless of this, a sociopath is, by definition, going to be abusive in one way or another. If they're not, they're not a sociopath.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Autism isn't a mental illness, it's developmental condition/disability.
