What fandom tropes, character types, or plots do you hate yourself for getting into?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Either because they are not as popular as other tropes/characters/plots or because they are always poorly handled by fans.

I know the "boy won't take no for an answer and wears girl down until they fall in love" is played out at best and really gross at worst, but......it's so charming sometimes!

It's too real for me to find it cute. I've seen it way, way too often IRL: "I'm not interested" has to mean "I'm not interested yet" so keep trying, son! Until it's creepy.

Until it's past the point of creepy.

Then they grow jaded and bitter and resentful of all women even though if they'd just moved on you they have found one already.

But no, keep pumping in those kindness coins. Sex will fall out someday.

Oh like I said its fucking gross and I've had it happen. I always hate myself when I fall for it in fiction.

Sometimes it works IRL.

And sometimes it doesn't. It works 100% (or damn near close enough) of the time in fiction, though.

IA with both the "yuck" and the "but sometimes..." sides of this.

However, I unabashedly and wholeheartedly love "boy won't take no for an answer and wears BOY down until they fall in love" (as long as the pursuer isn't significantly older than a teenage or barely-adult pursued) so I honestly don't know where that leaves me...

Het rarepairs involving a female character who doesn't get a lot of onscreen character development.

Fans ALWAYS seem to fill in the blanks of the woman's personality with a bland, dull, sweet, cool, stereotypical-perfect-supportive-wife/girlfriend-who-is-never-needy demurely feminine stock characterization even if there's no canon evidence to suggest she was anything like that.

This. Holy fuck this was the entire DMC fandom's characterization of Eva for a while, even though all of (admittedly scant) canon evidence we have is to the contrary (that she resembles Trish, that she has "fire," that she fucked a fucking demon prince.)

But, nah. She's a demurely passive soccer mom who sacrifices herself without a fight and with a smile, just waiting for Sparda to come home.

(There was a small group of us who were like "this is bullshit" in the fandom and one even wrote an epic-length fic wherein Eva was a demon-hunting motorcycle cop - i.e. that Dante takes after her, while Vergil takes after Sparda, which actually makes ~sense~ when you think about it - but fuck that when you can have a blandly generic saccharinely feminine helpless mom-blob who bakes cookies.)

It seems like the character I fall in love with is never the most popular one. The biggest exception is Steve Rogers but he wasn't popular when I first got into the MCU.

My love for gen fic especially hurt/comfort fic has been a constant source of aggravation for me.

My most recent super interest is Shiro off of Voltron (due to that recent secret). He is my favorite character type (warrior with a terrible and sad past who is fighting PTSD and such) but he is outnumbered in fic by Keith and Lance (and Keith/Lance). I am hoping he will become the slowburn popular character.

We lucked out big time that Winter Soldier was so good and made Steve way more compelling to the general fandom.

*sighs* At best they're ignored, at worst they're the fandom butt monkey.

I seem to have a thing for shipping pairings in which one half of the pairing is already with someone else in canon. I know one big reason why that sort of setup appeals to me, because of the whole "unrequited love" thing.

The problem is, however, that anytime the show, or fanfic writers (ESPECIALLY fanfic writers), DO put my favorite pairing together, so often the canon love interest winds up being abusive or just a generally bad-tempered person, thus giving their significant other a justifiable reason to dump them and run to the person I ship them with instead. Either that, or my pairing will have an affair (this solution is generally just a fanfic thing, though, thankfully) or the canon love interest gets killed off.

Obviously I don't condone affairs, nor do I like it when one part of a love triangle is made to be a jerk in fanfic when they're clearly not that way in canon (and if the canon love interest is written as a jerk in canon itself, or killed off, I think it's a cheap and easy out to avoid actually dealing with the struggles a love triangle would bring).

And yet, I still keep liking pairings where one half is with someone in canon anyway. Go figure.

The female character who's possible canon love interest(doesn't have to be) is male character A's best friend and exist solely to make him understand that he's in fact in love with male character B. She's practically a robot without any personality, Her defining features are ~flawless~ looks, sarcasm and the fact she's hypercompetent and can kill anybody using only her pinky.

For example Natasha in most slash pairings featuring Clint Barton

Can you honestly think of any other examples that fit your precise description, though? Because I can't.

DA.

Momoi gets this a lot in the KnB fandom. Well. Sans the killing bit, since that doesn't really work with the series.

I've seen Ginny Weasley used like this in Harry/Draco fics. It's better than seeing her character assassinated, but it's still frustrating.

In real life, I can't stand the fact that women hitting/being nasty to their partners is seen as 'cute' because women are 'harmless.' And yet my favorite pairings often involve 'Abrasive, occasionally violent girl/Good-natured guy.' (See: Helga/Arnold from Hey Arnold, or Sam/Freddie from iCarly. Both of which are the most dated references I could think of, of course.)

Re: What fandom tropes, character types, or plots do you hate yourself for getting into?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Helga/Arnold is the only example of that in my favorite pairings...but it is indeed a perfect example of the sort of pairing you mention.

I think in their case, at least, it helps that Helga's behavior isn't condoned (she goes to therapy over hitting Brainy), that Arnold calls her out on it, and that as the series goes on she works a little more to try and curb some of those violent tendencies. Still, though...

Yeah, but the therapy episode came relatively late in the series, and for the most part her aggressive behavior is either played for laughs or 'They only pick on you because they have a crush on you' which is an awful message for kids. And yet I love them so damn much, and I can't wait for the movie next year. I'm hoping it reconciles some of Helga's issues.

This is true. Good point.

But yeah, I'm excited for the movie, too. It's especially awesome that they were able to get so much of the original cast back :D.

I know! I'm so excited but it's still so far away. And I do not wait patiently for things.

The emotionless, snarky character who is also probably a badass fighter.
