43 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-04-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, I'm a production hire. Heck, I'm not even sure if programmers bother having a union. I'm coming in waaaay the heck at the bottom of the industry, being a recent college grad, so I've got pretty much nothing to work with here. Besides, the whole point is that there isn't any work for me to do in the first place.

I like sticking it to The Man as much as the next person, but this is ridiculous.

Well, that's why we have unions; to help those without power, and to create some leverage against the powerful companies! But I have heard that they hardly exist in the States. It really is nice, you know, to have a big organisation behind you when you get a bad deal.

I have to confess that I'm not really sure exactly what it is they want, or what their situation is at the moment. My first reaction is always that those with most money and power are probably in the wrong, though. XD

Except that the big bad company with all the power is doing all they can to get me out there- not to mention they're giving me an amazing first step into the industry and offering me hands-on training to do whatever I want in computer graphics. Yes, they're big and huge. But they're using their power for the forces of good, so far as I can see. I'm sure I'll be disillusioned later, but they're not the ones holding things up right now.

The problem is the actors aren't happy about new media residuals, which is fair enough in itself. In an effort to prevent this becoming a problem, the AMPTP offered SAG a deal that was pretty much on par with what the WGA got (and we all know how they fought tooth and nail for that). SAG lost the last of my patience when they turned the deal down and said it wasn't good enough.

The people with money and power aren't always wrong- case in point, the HP Lexicon case. On the flip side, the Hollywood actors aren't exactly hurting for money or power. I can't blame the studios for not wanting to start projects they can't finish without the actors- that's just smart business. I can blame the actors for sending everyone into a panic, when they definitely could have already ended this.

I know, I know, it was mostlty hyperbole; I wasn't completely serious. :)

Since I know very little of the company itself, all I can say is that it's all good until you have a conflict; it's then you might want a bigger organisation behind you. It's not that a company has to be evil or anything like that, just that they tend to move in the most profitable direction possible, and that's not always a good thing for the employees. Yes, I actually dare to express the opinion that profit alone is not good for a company! XD

SAG lost the last of my patience when they turned the deal down and said it wasn't good enough.

It's all a question of how much they get of the results they actually produce, to me. If their part is unproportionally small, well, I can understand their anger.

This is all, of course, the cultural bias I have from growing up in a country where people who make fantastic sums of money are generally viewed with suspicion rather than admiration, heh.
