Renting a Large Place On Vacation

I am thinking of taking a trip with 3-4 people either to DC or Seattle (maybe Dollywood). Has anyone here used AirBnB? What was your experience? What other options are there for housing that many people (some of who will be couples) other than a hotel?

My friend actually rented a place through AirBnB for her baby shower. (She has a small apartment and some non-local friends.) I don't know all of the ins and outs, but she seemed pretty happy with it, and it was a really nice place.
