Re: Dumbest mistakes about a piece of fiction you've ever seen

Well, the "wise owl" is a literary and artistic trope that's been around for a while, as is the "uneducated darkie." So, I'm guessing that's colorism in action.

I hadn't heard of owls being particularly stupid. Certainly they don't have the cleverness reputation of corvids.

Ignorant speculation follows: I don't expect owls are much more stupid in reality than other birds of prey. You might think of them as basically housecats with wings: nocturnal, with a highly developed and night-adapted vision system. Possibly much of the grey matter in owls' heads is used for audiovisual & spatial processing rather than the sort of problem-solving crows are known for.

I think they actually are quite stupid by comparison though, at the zoo I went to they mentioned during the bird show that they were the most difficult birds to train, counter to their reputation as being "wise". they had a lot of other birds of prey doing pretty complex actions, the owl only flew from point a to point b lol.

Well, easy-to-train is by no means the same thing as intelligent or wise. It only means "easy to train." That's it.

Housecats are practically impossible to train. And they also have skulls that are largely eyesockets. I am liking my "housecats with wings" analogy quite a lot now.

Cats are just about intelligent enough to be cats, if that makes sense. They are not generally that interested in whatever human beings try to get them to do. Not that bright, kind of stubborn, but they do observe a lot and learn.
