Speaking from experience, the most intelligent people don't use words like 'modicum' or 'bombastic' because they know that it does sound pretentious. But then, I'm pretty sure that I'm only of average intelligence, or possibly lower.
I did like your message, however, even if I don't really agree with it. You get all sorts in every fandom I've come across.

(unless you're joking ;_; i can't tell)

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Average human IQ is 100.

I highly doubt you're that or lower.

(Not joking, honest!)

[identity profile] eibborn.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see why not! After all, half of us have to be below average, and I don't really see why that number shouldn't include me. I'm by no means an idiot, but I'm not anything like exceptional either.

The way you're speaking to me indicates an intelligence level above the norm. I think you're really selling yourself short.

I can sympathize; for the longest time after reading Brave New World in eighth grade I thought I'd most likely be a beta, until one day years later it occurred to me that fuck, I read Brave New World in eighth grade.

Heh, you're too kind, but it's not too difficult for an unexceptional kid who paid attention in elementary school to learn the basics of how to write a sentence.

Re:

It's not the sentence structure so much as the logic and application of analysis behind it, not to mention the cognizant awareness of more than is considered average.

Most humans can contemplate their existence---it's what makes us human---but only so many actually bother to. And this is from someone who gives everyone benefit of the doubt.

Even if you don't consider yourself gifted, I really really doubt you're below average.

I should add: there is a large difference between "unexceptional" and "not smart".

I don't truly believe myself to be much below average, but I'm not far above either. I can accept that, no problem.
Thank you, though! I'll never deny that it's nice being told that I'm smart!

You see-- this is exactly what I'm talking about. Do you have any idea how stupid that makes me feel (in a sort of mortified-but-good way)?

Re: Op 69

[identity profile] eibborn.livejournal.com 2008-04-03 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I would feel so terrible if you hadn't added that '-but-good' part!

Just be careful that you don't use words that most people won't know too often! No one likes to feel dumb!

Re: Op 69

I appreciate the fact that you pointed it out. It was not intentional, and phrasing things correctly has always been a huge problem for me. I'm still in high school, and I have to memorize AP-level vocab in order to do well during testing. I incorporate some of the words I learn into my everyday speech in order to remember them, but that can be problematic (as you pointed out).

Re: 69

Not the OP, but I just wanted to point out that there is more than one type of intelligence. Understanding what type of language makes somebody sound pretentious is an indication of social and emotional intelligence, and may have nothing at all to do with an individual's IQ.

Re: 69

[identity profile] drworm.livejournal.com 2008-04-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but pretending that IQ is the be-all and end-all of TRUE intelligence or that social and emotional intelligence don't factor into general intelligence is kind of naive.

Re: 69

(Anonymous) 2008-04-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. That was the point I was aiming to make, and I worded it very poorly. (I clicked the 'post comment' button before I read it over) I apologize.

What I meant was, the 'upper tenth percentile' is measured purely by IQ scores, and that the OP may be experiencing her insecurity and isolation because of a relatively high IQ, but an emotional intelligence that is less developed.

Re: 69

[identity profile] drworm.livejournal.com 2008-04-03 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's very true. I know I was always very smart, but I feel between ages 18 and 22 I made a huge leap. And it's not because I learned more facts or bigger words, it's because I matured and have a better idea of how to think about things.

And people get too hung up on IQ scores without knowing much about the different tests. I always want to knock on the heads of the (apparently) very intelligent people who compare scores; the fact is that, once you get into "genius" territory, a higher number doesn't necessarily mean a smarter individual. Plus, scores can fluctuate with subsequent retakes. But IQ is such a convenient way to measure smart-dicks or something. :/

Re: 69

(Anonymous) 2008-04-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
To the first point: Absolutely. I think it's very telling that the OP says she's still in high school.

To the second point: LOL. That's what it comes off as to me as well.

Or they pick and choose when they use them in order to manipulate how they appear in different settings.

People who make a big deal over how large or obscure their words are tend to use those words to say mediocre things. :/
