Not the OP, but I just wanted to point out that there is more than one type of intelligence. Understanding what type of language makes somebody sound pretentious is an indication of social and emotional intelligence, and may have nothing at all to do with an individual's IQ.

Yeah, but pretending that IQ is the be-all and end-all of TRUE intelligence or that social and emotional intelligence don't factor into general intelligence is kind of naive.

You're right. That was the point I was aiming to make, and I worded it very poorly. (I clicked the 'post comment' button before I read it over) I apologize.

What I meant was, the 'upper tenth percentile' is measured purely by IQ scores, and that the OP may be experiencing her insecurity and isolation because of a relatively high IQ, but an emotional intelligence that is less developed.

Re: 69

That's very true. I know I was always very smart, but I feel between ages 18 and 22 I made a huge leap. And it's not because I learned more facts or bigger words, it's because I matured and have a better idea of how to think about things.

And people get too hung up on IQ scores without knowing much about the different tests. I always want to knock on the heads of the (apparently) very intelligent people who compare scores; the fact is that, once you get into "genius" territory, a higher number doesn't necessarily mean a smarter individual. Plus, scores can fluctuate with subsequent retakes. But IQ is such a convenient way to measure smart-dicks or something. :/

To the first point: Absolutely. I think it's very telling that the OP says she's still in high school.

To the second point: LOL. That's what it comes off as to me as well.
