Though I don't personally have experience with guns (which feels kind of odd given that I live in Texas and pretty much everyone surrounding me owns guns and is quite experienced with them), I just wish gun laws were stricter.

Yeah, gun laws in the US are ridiculously lax, and people are so uninformed about them (I've had two relatives from different states insist background checks are required, and had to point out that isn't true for gun shows).

... yes, it is. At least, for the dealers. Background checks are not required for private transactions between individuals (depending on jurisdiction). If that takes place at a gun show, well, it's still a private transaction between individuals.

That being said, as a gun owner, I would not sell one of my guns to someone I didn't know, or to someone who didn't have a concealed-carry permit (because people with CCPs have been through an FBI background check already).

That doesn't contradict anything I just said. The thing is, federal law was changed and now 'private transaction between individuals' even covers people selling large quantities of weapons at gun shows. I know this because I just had to do this research two weeks ago for a relative who thought I was making it up.

Yup. Texas is so gun happy it often makes me nervous going into places. Like, there are signs on the San Antonio bus saying that people are allowed to open carry on the bus. Scary.

To me that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

That is hilarious, because I live in Utah and I'm just the opposite. I was recently in Hollywood, and extremely nervous walking down the street because all I could think was "There is not a single good guy on this sidewalk with me who is armed."

We have open carry in Utah (as long as the gun is two actions from firing). I always just assume that anyone open carrying is a law enforcement officer. Anyone carrying concealed? You're not going to know it unless something goes truly pear-shaped.

The open carry nitwits caused a lot of backlash in Austin. Tons of businesses just banned guns on the premises.
