I love Riley. I think a lot of the hate comes from people completely misinterpreting his problems with Buffy as being "baaaaaaw! She's stronger than mmeeeee My manliness is damaged!"

Eh, I think that was definitely one of the problems he had in his relationship. But it was a bit more complex than that, in that it was 'She's stronger than me, and I am no longer on steroids and my whole life turned out to be a lie, and therefor she doesn't need me. My manliness is damaged and I am not important."

Nah, to me it was clear the whole thing was more about Buffy's walls and inability to open up and trust in people than Riley needing to feel like a big strong manm

She lost her mother and had to be the parent for Dawn. She had to be strong. She had to hide things. She had to have walls in that moment just to survive mentally. And Riley expected her to lean on him and share everything with him and show all her emotions. He wasn't willing to be what she actually needed in that moment, he was more interested in his idea of being needed and manly and protective.

Riley left before her mother died.

Oh, yes, you are right. But her mother was sick. She was dealing with that. So I think the point still stands that he expected her to be someone she wasn't because of his own need to feel like the man.

Yes, this! Buffy definitely did put up walls and contribute heavily to the decline of her and Riley's relationship, but that doesn't mean Riley didn't have clearly defined character flaws due to his obsessive need to be needed.

That was definitely part of it, but that doesn't mean the other criticism isn't valid. That's why I liked Riley so much, he and Buffy were both complex people with multiple issues.
