Sometimes I feel too nerdy for RL, but not nerdy enough for the internet.

(Really I think it's that I'm more "I love reading and history" nerdy than "I read anime all the time" nerdy. Even when it comes to fandom, I meta more than ship.)

I've always been curious. What exactly is meta? I've seen different blogs tag different kinds of posts as "meta," so I'm wondering if there's a unifying definition for the term.

AYRT - Honestly, don't really know because it seems to depend on who's talking. For some people it seems to be OT stuff that's tangentially related. For me, it means exploring the universe by writing LJ posts or essays or whatever else. Did you by any chance read Tom and Lorenzo's Mad Men recaps? That was meta. I also posted my thoughts on Mad Men on LJ from time to time, including Joan and Peggy's relationship, which also counts as meta.

I always saw it as fic being the, well, fiction about a world, and meta being the nonfiction discussing that world. Exploring the psychology of why a character made certain decisions, trying to predict what will happen based on the established things we know about that world, looking at how a romance supports or deconstructs different tropes.

Fic writing will often incorporate meta concepts--Harry will defeat Voldemort with power X based on this theory about how love and magic work, Kirk and Spock and McCoy have an interpersonal dynamic which means they could find happiness gettin' it on together, genderswapped Tony Stark would have developed a different relationship with her parents because societal expectations--but use those elements in terms of a story, not an analysis.

Or that's how I distinguish them, anyhow.

You definitely aren't needy enough to know that you don't read anime.
