You quit because someone told you to reformat your header?

You sound rather...sensitive. And not in a "I am caring" kind of way.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how you read this secret? I read it as a combination of that and very little feedback.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people get very little feedback because their efforts are poor.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well of course. I'm just sayin' I wouldn't have bothered posting there again, either, if the mod was nitpicky about formatting and it didn't yield feedback anyway. Would you?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - That's how I took it as well.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I understand being frustrated by little feedback, but even combined with the reformat command, to ragequit writing for life seems over the top to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you write? If so, do you remember how you felt posting your very first fic?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
DA

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I do to both.

If you're trying to prove that I just don't get how haaaaaaaaard it is to stick to a hobby when no one nurtures it, you can stop. I've had people complain about things I put in my first fic, including a webmaster, who told me I needed to dial down some things (despite the fact there was zero quality control at the time). I've had the quality of some fic criticized and downright insulted. I've even been ignored in favor of people who write about the popular series. I write for obscure fandoms and am lucky if I get one or two reviews a year. One of my fics was denied entry in a contest because it was for a fandom the creator despised. In spite of that, over fifteen years later, I'm still at it. Why? I have weird shit in my head that, for some reason, wants to make the transition to a word processor. And it never occurred to me to hold a grudge against people who didn't kiss my ass over the first thing I wrote.

(This part is directed more to OP, in case you're not OP)

So your first fic didn't get the feedback you thought it deserved. Yeah, it sucks. Here's the thing, though. You kill your chances for ANY feedback by refusing to ever write again. It's great you think enough of yourself and your talent to state that the comm and its mod didn't "deserve you." But the public isn't missing the work of someone who refuses to ever make their mark, so... I'm not sure what you were hoping to accomplish with such a comment.

I understand why this is a secret, really. I just wonder if, during these last six years, it ever occurred to you that neither the community nor its mod were responsible for your reaction to their critique (or lack of).

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
You sound angry.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
not really?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
DA. No, they don't. And "you sound angry" is not an argument.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sorry.

NO U

Is that a more acceptable response?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but yes, and yes. I understand what it's like to feel vulnerable and nervous putting your writing out there for the world to see. It still doesn't entitle you to invulnerability from minor corrections like reformatting, nor does it entitle you to feedback.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
dude, no one is obligated to nurture continued production of shitty fanfic to add to the decaying mounds of shitty fanfic already out there.. Say what you will about it being a hobby, I can't think of one other hobby in existence where people feel so entitled to having others pay attention to them while they're hobbying.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not getting much feedback sucks, sure. But readers don't owe you feedback and gloating over a dead community because nobody commented on your fic is hard to interpret as anything except petty.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree with this. Way over sensitive.
