It's surprisingly not. I can't go a day into the fandom tags for anything I like without seeing a post from someone claiming to be "kin" with a character from it and looking for other kins from the same fandom.

Although... I mostly like cartoons/anime, so maybe it's an animation fandom thing.

it's not just animation fandom, you'll see it a lot in video game fandom as well, see: tales from the borderlands

So basically, the same stupid stuff that has been present in anime and video game fandom on the Internet for the last 20 years, except now you actually see it because you're all jammed together on the tags on Tumblr?

Yup. That always looks to me like a roleplay that wants to pretend it's real.
