I think it is a very, very, very specific subset that say that.

True though they're very loud and vocal with their opinion so they're definitely drawing attention.

I've literally never seen anyone on Tumblr refer to a character as their "-kin" unless I was looking for it.

Depends on the fandom you're in. You're very lucky. There are some that are flooded with fiction-kin, I wish I was kidding.

which fandoms are the worst for that in your experience, out of curiosity? (I've noticed it with SU when I've been poking around links of weird profiles/other stuff that's weird on tumblr)

I've seen a couple of people in the A:TLA / Korra fandom who actually thought they were the Avatar. I wouldn't say it's a big thing, but still a thing.

well, *thinking* these things is one thing. this kind of paranoid narcissism can get you a long way in life. The weird thing is that more and more kids nowadays don't just *think* they're [The Avatar/Whatever Character/Demon/Reborn Jesus] but discuss it more openly and mutually reinforce these ideas.

Talk about being a snowflake o.O

Surprisingly enough, I've never seen it in Supernatural (I would've thought that AngelKin would be a thing that existed for sure). Maybe they're crowded out by all of the other crazy in that fandom?

Here's some fandoms that I noticeably see an uncommonly big amount of fictionkin in:

Gravity Falls, Dangan Ronpa, Overwatch, Fire Emblem, Undertale, Five Nights at Freddy's, Pokemon,

Do people say they're kin to Pokémon (Pokékin?) or to the human characters? Both?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I had it happen with one person (so I guess that's till good). She seemed like a normal fan at first and then BAM fiction kin. First only one character... and then she started agonizing about maybe it was another character instead. It was really bizarre.
I mean, she had mental health issues, but so have other people who don't suddenly go all fiction kin.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't look for it, but there were a couple of big threads about people identifying as fictionkin and listing their fictives on Flight Rising. And curiously checking out their tumblrs revealed more.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...that's definaitly not a mainstream fandom thing and it probably never will. I think you can relax OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's surprisingly not. I can't go a day into the fandom tags for anything I like without seeing a post from someone claiming to be "kin" with a character from it and looking for other kins from the same fandom.

Although... I mostly like cartoons/anime, so maybe it's an animation fandom thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
And I think it has a lot to do with age too.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
it's not just animation fandom, you'll see it a lot in video game fandom as well, see: tales from the borderlands

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
So basically, the same stupid stuff that has been present in anime and video game fandom on the Internet for the last 20 years, except now you actually see it because you're all jammed together on the tags on Tumblr?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. That always looks to me like a roleplay that wants to pretend it's real.
