But how else are they going to collect Special Snowflake Points?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
my theory is not that they want to be special, it's that they want to be Right

if you identify with a character, you're more or less basing off canon. on the other hand saying you're kin makes your headcanon the 'real' thing and other people are Wrong when they disagree with you about them and you would know because you're kin. plebs who only identify know nothing

Idk, made-up neo-genders/claiming to be non-binary when they're not seems pretty popular.

I've never heard of that ever. Everyone I know still uses "relates" or "identifies."

Be glad you didn't stumble over fiction-kin. Be very glad.

You probably hang around a more mature crowd (also mature=/=older, young folk can be mature in mindset).

People still talk about liking and identifying with characters all the time. There's a minority who have added in this new thing but that doesn't mean the former has gone away.

I think it is a very, very, very specific subset that say that.

True though they're very loud and vocal with their opinion so they're definitely drawing attention.

Yeah...that's definaitly not a mainstream fandom thing and it probably never will. I think you can relax OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's surprisingly not. I can't go a day into the fandom tags for anything I like without seeing a post from someone claiming to be "kin" with a character from it and looking for other kins from the same fandom.

Although... I mostly like cartoons/anime, so maybe it's an animation fandom thing.

Ugh, gross. I thought the whole "otherkin" was a world of it's own. Since when can you be "kin" to something that is a figment of writers' imaginations?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently this has been going on for years, even back when lj still was a thing. But it was on tumblr the community took really off.

I get wishing, sometimes desperately, to be a specific character, or identifying very strongly with aspects of their personality or experience, but I really don't get thinking you are them. I have disassociation issues sometimes when life gets bad, and it sounds like these people do too or something, but what happens when these people change fannish obsessions or interests? Do they cling to their old fictional identity, or switch, or what?

How do you do that negative font effect?

I haven't seen any of this, only complaints about it, but I really hope it doesn't catch on that hard.

In my experience its mostly children and mentally unstable people I see doing that. So yeah its dumb but it seems harmless in the long run and I am capable of ignoring it. I imagine the fad will die down.

I don't think that's true? Like yeah people do it but the way you worded this implies that nobody ever says "I relate to ___" anymore and I still see that. I think fictionkin are a minority that is gaining steam but it's not going to be the new fandom norm.

(caveat: I mostly do fandom here, so...)

This is a very pretty, hipstery secret, OP. I appreciate your effort. So many of the secrets are downright ugly. <3

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
But no one is actually serious about this, are they? Isn't this more like having fun playing around with astrology or something? You don't actually believe in it for real, it doesn't affect your offline life.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care what they do because I can always ignore them, but... I hate that they're clearly starting to bleed through into mainstream "acceptable" territory. it used to be everyone thought of them as freaks and obviously crazy or attention-seeking, now if you even joke about otherkin someone will pop up to say maybe they're using it as a coping method! maybe they have mental illness! it won't be long before fictionkin becomes an acceptable identity, and it's pathetic.
