I want to focus on my own life, but I live with my mom, who crossed the line from functional to dysfunctional alcoholic about five years ago, and I'm basically her caretaker. The advice to let her make her own mistakes and focus on myself is well meant, but I stand to inherit her house and any money that's left when she dies, which means I have to make sure her bills and premiums get paid so everything isn't eaten by debt. It's a fuckton easier to deal with her when she's not drunk off her ass, knocking herself silly, pissing herself, and/or forgetting to take her meds, but I can't force her. Social services and her doctors won't step in to help me take care of her unless she tries to stay sober, and she won't. I'm going nuts, and all the "live your own life" crap sounds fine, but I can't afford to live on my own and she can't afford a live in caretaker, and waiting for her to hit bottom and leaving her to clean up her own mess just means waiting forever for bills to get paid, groceries to get bought, laundry and dishes to get washed, piss puddles to be mopped, and so on, until I get sick of waiting and do it myself.

I'm sorry anon. That really sounds fucking awful. :(

Do you at least have an emotional support system yourself outside of your mom?

(Also, have you mentioned her before? it's jogging a vague memory of an anon talking about caring for their alcoholic mom)

(I take it "hide/throw out the booze" isn't a viable option?)

I'm the most vocal of the has an alcoholic mom club, but there's at least one more around FS. I don't really have a support system, and neither does my mom; my aunt, her sister-in-law, is probably the closest thing to practical/emotional support, but my aunt comes from a family of alcoholics herself and dealt with that by avoding them and alcoholics in general, so spending any amount of time with my mom is stressful for her (for anyone, really.)

As for throwing out the booze--so far today I've confiscated two airplane bottles and a liter and a half of vodka. At some point mom went and got more, though, and I've given up for the day. Every day I'm not at work or school is like this, pretty much. I dump it, or use it for art projects, steep fruit in it and cook with it. I have chickens and the poor things have mites; maybe I'll spray down the chicken coop with vodka and see if it kills the bugs.

Ouch. Maybe you could be each others' support club? But it makes a difference, I think, to know people IRL/be close to them.

I truly admire your tenacity. And I hope the vodka does help with the chickens!
