Bloodline is probably a better start if you want to stick with new canon. I still can't get through Aftermath and I've read all of the old post-Return of the Jedi books.
If you want to pretend "The Force Awakens" didn't happen and don't care if you read an AU version of things, I really recommend the Thrawn Trilogy. PLUS THRAWN IS COMING BACK. Differently, but he'll be in the next season of Rebels and he'll get his own book.
The Thrawn Trilogy is a great "what if" scenario post Return of the Jedi and a bit happier than "The Force Awakens."

Re: Help!
Like I said, I can't get through Aftermath, it just doesn't pull me in and I can't handle the writing style. It may deal a bit with the First Order, but I couldn't tell you.
Lost Stars takes place primarily before A New Hope through Return of the Jedi. It deals more with the Rebellion and the Empire.
Hope this helps.
